I think it comes down to how long the body had actually been in production. Although that rebel may have been released earlier, they may have been designing the 6D for longer. Even if we only get 19 points in the 6D2, as long as they're all cross type and we have DPAF I'm happy!

The number isn't as important to me as the spread. For instance, I would rather have cross 19 points with four covering the rule of thirds than to have 45-62 cross point with no points covering the rule of thirds.

Couldn't agree more. Although if you have DPAF that would really help with framing. I always want to use the far right AF point for full body portraits but can never nail focus with my 6D. The tracking on DPAF would make that super easy.

All I want is improved autofocus. I am finding my current 6d's are really having trouble focusing in difficult situations such as back lighting, and shady areas.

Maybe you push your camera(s) harder than I do. My 6D is the best-focusing body I've ever had. It is dead-on accurate with every lens I own, every time. This may matter: I only use the center point, and generally avoid AI-Servo. I bought a 1DIV for that.

That's interesting. I find the 6d rocks for AI-Servo. I find backlighting is where it struggles the most. I am using 6d's for wedding photography however

The percentage of time I put my subject at the center focusing point in a picture is essentially zero.

It's something of a luxury that the better bodies with larger numbers of reliable AF points spread out across more of the frame allow us to use. On bodies like the 6D and 5D2 (and even the D610/600 to slightly lesser extent IMO, though there you're talking about the small centre 3 columns) the centre point is almost mandatory - you can work around this by framing a bit more loosely to allow a crop in post for the composition you desire

I've been wanting a FF that doesn't cost USD $3,500 or more so if a improved 6D were released I'd be all over that!

That might have been a luxury 5 years ago, but a camera that can focus consistently away from the center should be the norm for a camera in 2016. If the 6DII does not have a more robust AF system I'd call it a bust.

With the specs of the new 5d4 compared to what sony is offering I don't see anything that a 6d2 will offer that isn't already being offered by a Sony counterpart. However you would need to switch gear which isn't the most cost effective thing to do

Unfortunately even Canon lenses do not hold value like they did in the past and are not as easy to sell. Switching gear would be costly.

The good thing about getting a Sony body is that you can adapt your Canon lenses....but most people who get a Sony body with the intention of adapting lenses end up transitioning to Sony lenses for various reasons. (mostly because adapted AF is not the best, and Sony lenses are actually really good).

Sony gear actually holds its value better than Canon does these days, so its moving from Canon to Sony can be painful. I have been transitioning over the past two years or so and I'm happy with the move, but it's been expensive. The ability to adapt lenses does mean you can take your time transitioning, which has been nice.

This may matter: I only use the center point

But you paid for ALL the points....the rest of the points generally suck, center point is fantastic no doubt...but when center point can't lock on (which does happen when I am doing RE photography), then most of the time, none of the other points can either, even when a point is sitting squarely on a area of high contrast/low contrast. My older 7d doesn't have the same issue.
