My friends 14 year old is playing hockey and they want some pictures. I have 7Dmk2 and 70-200 2.8Mk2 and 100-400ISMk2. Any tips and help would be appreciated. I was told I will be in the upper bleacher using 150-200 range and lighting sucks

Heya,

ISO 6400 or ISO 12,800, wide open aperture, 1/640s to 1/1000s shutter. Shoot manual.

Use the 70-200MKII and be prepared to crop heavily.

Or use the 400MKII, max out the ISO, and shoot at 1/500s and hopefully they're not that fast!

Very best,

No.

You would be shooting at maximum sync speed of you camera, which is 1/250s. Since your entire exposure is not based on the flash, most of it is still ambient light, you will get nothing but blur and some fill light shooting at that shutter speed. Also, at the distance you are shooting from, a speedlite will not output enough to even really matter really. A better beamer can help a bit with that, but not enough to justify the loss in shutter speed and the blurry photos that will result with it.

You're better off pushing ISO through the roof, slightly over-exposing by 1/3rd to 2/3rd of a stop, in RAW, and getting a sharp photo of action, 10 FPS all you want, and using the fastest glass you have with reach.

Very best,
