Looking for some help with my 7D, I bought it second hand not long ago but never tried to put it into video mode, not something I use often.

However when I tried, the lever that rotates to the left to engage video mode is jammed. Did a quick Google search and found suggestions to use some dental floss to get the dirt from out behind the lever, but it does not seem to have made any difference.

Is this a common problem? And is there anything I can do other than sending it somewhere for a pull apart repair $$$?

Thanks,
Adam

If you find it is inevitable that it needs to be sent in for repair, I would suggest something that probably goes against the grain with most here. Push it. Shimmy it. HARD. My bet is that it will move before it breaks. That's just ME. No warranty implied. If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

If it does "break loose," chances are it will be much easier from now on.

My daddy ran a garage for 45 years and I spent an inordinate amount of time there working on everything from cars to heavy equipment and our motto was, "If it didn't move, you didn't hit it hard enough." ;)

Ha, I did consider that. But my biggest fear is it going into video and snapping off, then not being able to put it back into photo mode. Plus compromising it's weather sealing.

Might try feeding a small amount of a penetrate lubricant in and letting it sit for a while to see if it frees up.

That I would not do under ANY circumstances.

For what reason? From my understanding, there is an O ring around the switch which is likely to be dried out. A small amount of lubricant (Inox) should lubricate the O ring without entering the camera body.

That o-ring ain't keeping it from moving. Penetrating lub can be dangerous to electronics. Maybe carefully with a toothpick but even then, I'd be very careful.

Don't turn a $20 switch into a $20 switch and a $200 system board.
