Hi all,

So i have always been a Canon man, through and through. I even trained my wife to only buy canon as it was the best.... now i'm starting to worry i'm falling off the canon bandwagon and go over to the dark of darkest sides... Sony.

Since i saw the release of the A7 i have been tempted to ditch my gear and go mirrorless.

At the moment i have a 1D Mark III and i LOVE it. Two card slots, Weatherproofing, Insaine battery life (over 2k shots per charge) and it looks beast!
HOWEVER
A friend of mine recommended i should look at the A6000.
From what i have seen the IQ is better than the Canon, The DR is A LOT better and SOOC the images are almost printworthy, It is also SIGNIFICANTLY lighter as well as sharper. So here i am. I don't have the choice of buying the A7 or the A6000 without selling my 1D as i would use the money to get one with.

I do also have (not a lot but a few) EF glass; 50-500 Sigma, 8mm Bower, 50mm 1.8 Canon lenses. Am i right in thinking i can get an adapter so i could keep them and use them on the A6000 / A7?

Sorry for waffling. just wanted some advice.

The body has received rave reviews. If a small size is appealing then why not?

Just a thought... the new version of that Sony body will be out very soon. Wait and get it (or the A6000 for even less).

If you "LOVE" your 1Diii, why on earth would you sell it, sell all your lenses and move to a whole new system and start over from scratch? Don't make the same mistake I did by selling off my Canon gear and switching brands (including the Sony A7) and ending right back up with Canon 3 weeks later. What do you feel mirrorless can give you that is lacking in your camera right now? Your best bet would be renting a Sony body and lens and going from there.

I do LOVE my 1DIII but I hate the low MP count. the axamples i have seen from the A7 have sharpness i just can't find for some reason on my 1D. The other thing i liked was the weight. It's great having a hench body but sometimes i feel its a bit much.

It's a great idea about renting. I'll have a look into that and see if i get on with it before jumping ship.

Thanks for talking some sense into me.

The first generation A7x series is a mess, thats why they rushed out the 2nd generation so quick. So you would want to be looking at an A7ii or one of those. The A7ii is $1700 right now, you can get the Canon 6D for way less if you are looking for a Canon FF with more resolution then your current camera. The $300 rebate on the 6D makes it $1400 till Oct 6th I think, thats a steal. I picked one up, no regrets.

Not in the same league as FF Canons or FF Sonys. It's a good camera but it feels like a toy to me, like a glorified point and shoot.

Just to throw a curveball at you. . . . .I'm currently holding an A7RII in my hands right now. I'll be honest, I'm a bit frustrated. I've been shooting a 5DII for about 6 years and I love the ergonomics of it. Right now I'm finding the ergonomics of the A7 to be hugely annoying. The files look great at a low iso with good light. However, I've found that the AF can't compete with even my 5DII indoors. Moving the focus point area is a pain. I like to use back button AF but using it on the A7 means I end up poking myself in the eye with my thumb. :( Right now I'm just not in a position to sell all of my EF lenses and replace them with the Sony/Zeiss equivelants. Meanwhile the AF using Canon glass on the Sony (with the Metabones adapter) is only really adequate outside in good light. I say rent one and shoot with it. You may fall in love with it, or be so frustrated with the ergonomics that you want to smash it into a brick wall. vmad:-P

HAHA! Thanks for the heads up! I had the 5DII for a bit but wasn't that impressed. It's a good camera but just... i don't know. felt something was lacking.

I think i'll have to write a list of cameras to rent and try. Every one i have had has had something lacking.
I think my ideal is going to be the 1DX, having the ergonomics of the 1DIII but with great crispness. but unfortunately that is out of my price range. Maybe i'm not ready for mirrorless yet.... or maybe mirrorless isn't ready for me?

Didn't know what your budget was, if its enough to afford a 1DX, that changes things a bit. Get a 5Diii or better yet, a 5Ds and call it a day. If you are looking for "crispness" as you say, nothing in Canon's current lineup is going to out-crisp the 5Ds and its 50mp sensor. With either body, you'll still have money left over for a new lens or two that you would have put into the 1DX body alone.

Well, I moved from a 1DX and a 5Dm3 over to sony. I currently shoot the A7rii, A7ii and the a6000. The focusing speed of the the A7rii indoors is as good as anything barring the A7s. So I ask the guy above, are you using the Canon lenses with an adapter? If so, you your focusing will be slower than the 5Dii, but not by much. I shoot the A7ii indoors all the time, I shoot both canon and FE mount (kept all my canon lenses). The fe lenses are lightening fast and as sharp as anything out there. The fe 35 1.4 is one of the best lenses I've ever used.

The a7ii can be found easily used for around 12-1300, a steal for that camera.

As far as ergonomics, it's a little awkward at first but you get used it. Especially when you're able to shoot one handed without getting on the ground or you can comfortably carry 3 cameras for 8 hours without breaking your back. I'm a working photographer and these things have made my job a heck of a lot easier.

I love canon, shot them for 20 years. But their lack of innovation (even in the latest 5D series) drove me away. I still have my 1Ds II and still use it. But my go to cameras are the A7rii and the A7ii...the a600 I use for sports because it keeps up focus tracking with the 7dII easily. The 1DX beat everything for focus though.

I've shot weddings, low light sporting events, studio work, product work ..just about everything with the a7 series and I've never been disappointed.

The only thing I would like to see really, really improved is the forward and back tracking...that is the one place I've found suspect (except in the a6000)

used the 5DII, didn't like it. Used 700D, Didn't like it, used 1DII, 1DIIN and 1DIII and love them. as i stated above the 1DX is out of price range so although it would be my preferred camera (ish) there is no hope for me to buy it.

So the choices would be keep the 1DIII, sell and get A7 or A6000

You haven't tried the 5Diii, 6D or 5Ds?

I borrowed a 6D and liked it but i felt there were too many "features" the one thing i did like was the GPS Geotagging.
The 5DIII doesn't apeal to me as it's basically a 5DII but i would like to try out the 5Ds.
