I use the 600 RT and I shoot with the camera in manual, underexposing the background by 2/3 of a stop, the flash in ETTL and set the ISO at 100 or 200. My shots come out perfect every time.

I do that outdoors as well. About one stop. Indoors as close to metered centre as possible as I can and try not to let it go lower than 3 stops. 2 is better.

He's using manual mode, so no exposure compensation. You dial it in until the light meter shows that you are the desired level below standard exposure. Then you add flash to your taste. There you can use flash exposure compensation, if you use E-TTL.

I keep my 5Dmk3 in +2/3 in Av, P and Tv modes. When in manual I will go from 0 to -2/3 exposure with Flash in partial meter mode. I guess I didnt word it correctly previous. If I am not in M mode and have the flash on I will back it down to 0 exp compensation since my camera need +2/3 exp for "normal" exposure

Not 2/3 compensation. Just 2/3 of a stop underexposed using manual mode. I was taught this technique by a guy by the name of Brent Foster, one of Canada's Top Ten wedding photographers. It's my standard, "Go-to" setting for outdoor portraits.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

Hi James I do understand. I found this out by trial and error. I found that being underexposed by 2/3 of a stop using on camera flash in ettl or on a bracket the exposures came out great.

The option BigAl mentions is on all reasonably recent EOS cameras. You have to go back to models like the 40D for this particular setting not to be there. It had only floating or locked at shortest flash sync time.

This is in the camera or flash menu?

For older cameras among the custom functions. For newer models in the Shooting/flash settings menu.
