Lens mount damage?

Hi there, I'm not really sure where to post this but i'm curious if i could damage my camera with my plan.

I'm looking at getting a spider holster to use with my 1D3 and Sigma BIGMA (50-500) lens.
My plan is to mount the tripod / monopod mount on the lens foot and the spider on the body.
Could i damage the lens mount by hanging the kit from this?

i don't know much about the spider holster, but isn't it designed for like handholding, and to sit on the side of your body? if you have that going on, then why would you need a tripod/monopod mount as well? if you're going to be handholding it only, i'd mount the spider to the lens...and if you're going to use the tripod/monopod mount, then i don't see how the spider comes into play...

and the end of the day though, i don't think the weight of the lens alone would cause any damage from just hanging off the camera

Well i was going to have the tripod mount for a monopod when i am shooting at a Car race circuit and the spider holster (belt) when i am shooting with my other camera.

So all should be fine, with it hanging off the camera. I guess time will tell!

I wouldn't. Time will doubtless tell you that the body's not really designed to support a large lens, more like the other way around (which is one reason big lenses have tripod mounts, and also one why they have their own strap attachment points).

If you want to carry the gear on the Spider, then yes. Maybe consider the QR approach - attach the Spider to a QR clamp that corresponds to the QR your tripod/monopod head uses. Or just (if the Bigma has attachment points) let the camera ride on the lens' strap.

well the bigma has a lens mount so i can attach the kit to that (what you you mean by lens strap?)

Canon's big lenses, for instance, come with tabs for attaching a strap (and the strap to attach to it) so you don't carry everything around hanging off the camera.

Ah ok, No i don't think it has that, just the lensmount for a tripod.

if you look behind the tripod mount on the lens, there should be a spot where you can feed a strap, that goes around the metal of the knob...at least that's how it is on my 150-500OS

I wouldn't even consider this. I've been shooting with a Spider for over two years and big lenses never feel right hanging off my hip. They slow you down, they bounce off your thigh every time you move not to mention the stress you put on the actual mount from having the lens hang down.

hmm... now looking at the capturpro with the propad....

with the range of the bigma, do you even need a second body and lens? i mean what other focal lengths are you going to be using for car racing?
