Do the Lp-e6 batteries for the 5dIII / 6D ever go on sale? Looks like they go for $60 (USD) normally. Black Friday?

Are you tied to OEM, or would you consider saving up to 75% on well known third-party batteries?

SterlingTek has the LP-E6 for $14.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Think I'm going to stick with OEM, guys. My 6D came with the Canon OEM as well as a Green Extreme aftermarket. It seems to be decent but obviously doesn't hold a charge as long as the Canon brand. Its currently my 'backup' at a wedding but I'm thinking I should have more than just one Lp-E6 for both my 5dIII and 6D when I'm shooting weddings. Currently they last the whole gig but I'd like a little more anal-retentive peace of mind. Maybe another 1-2 OEM batteries.

Thanks all.

I paid full price for an OEM when I was desperate and had not other choice. I have two after markets from eBay as well. I rotate all five of them (along with the OEM that came with the 7D2) and don't pay no mind which I use as they all seem to last long enough.

Don't be scared about aftermarket batteries... oftentimes they are made in the same factory as the OEM. As long as you read the reviews and buy the good ones... because there IS trash out there as well.

Agreed with not being afraid. I have used Watson and Sterlingtek batteries and chargers from Amazon in half a dozen cameras- all have performed perfectly.

I use the Wasabi LP-E6.
They are way cheaper. I do notice a difference in charge though. Sometimes I end up with 1 Wasabi and 1 Canon in my battery grip, both fully charged. I check the battery % on my 70D after a few hours of shooting and the Wasabi is usually about twice as gone as the Canon.
BUT for the price of 1 Canon battery you can get 2-4 Wasabi batteries (depending on where you buy them). I have had no failures and the chargers work ok, though still not as nice as the Canon charger.

I also use them in my SL1 and they work fine. They last long enough for my use.

You generally get what you pay for, but in this case, what you give up in quality is not that much compared to how much you can save. Go with Wasabi if you are looking to save.

I tend to stick to OEM too. Yes, they are expensive but, I still have the original Canon EOS1 battery from November 2000 and it's still working fine. Don't know how many charge/discharge cycles it's gone through as I bought it second-hand 10 years ago.

A battery buff (anal retention type ... ) tells me it's the lack of use that damages batteries so too many spares may not be such a good idea. That certainly seems to bear truth when I start chucking away numbers of AA cells that are hardly used and a couple years old, yet some lower capacity ones are 10yrs plus old still working well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a certified cheapskate and have little brand loyalty. I have black electrical tape over the word "canon" on all my cameras and even a few lenses

My experience with the battery grip matches yours. The Green Extreme seems to burn through charge faster than the Canon. This is what I don't want to mess with at an event like a wedding. I'm also wondering if these off brands will last as long as a Canon battery will... as far as their lifespan in years.

I guess I figure its bad enough I'm using Vello brand battery grips. For the most part they've been good to me, better than Adorama's Flashpoint brand, but I have occasionally had a current problem or two and don't want to compound that risk (shorting out the SD/CF card, namely) by having even more aftermarket stuff floating around the system.

I have one genuine Canon LP-E6 battery and one Green Extreme LP-E6 battery. The Canon one is slightly better in retaining power if unused for a few months.

Current gear: One crop frame body, a couple of lenses, one flash
Wishlist: More time; better photography skills, some good glass, full-frame body.....
