I'm hoping I can get some advice. Apologies in advance if the post is confusing and long winded. Oh and yes, I have searched, I've googled and I've read till my brain hurts. The more I read, the more I'm confused.

I have a 70D and use it for everything, my reason for choosing it was for its video ability, of which I love. I had a 17-55 2.8 as my go to lens for pretty much everything including video, though I found it too short for video (example, videoing my son at local pump track on his balance bike, can't zoom enough), but dealt with it due to my usual video subject is my son and im usually in very close proximity and the my next lens being a 70-200 IS v1, also when using the video option I'm generally not in a position where I want to be swapping lenses (either it's inconvenient or the environment like a beach etc). Now due to recently purchasing a 16-35 F4 IS and having to sell the 17-55 for an impending ff purchase for better landscape, seascape and astro work, but will be keeping the 70D for holiday general duties. I need a good walk around lens for a ff and good general lens for video on the 70D. I don't want a cheaper STM style lens, if I'm going to buy a lens, I want to get a good compromise of image quality and versatility, with the advantage of L series weather sealing.

The lens choices... 24-70 F4 IS and the 24-105 F4 IS. I'm leaning towards the 24-105 for its extra reach, particularly during video use. The 24-70 2.8 II is out purely due to its cost.

But after purchasing the 16-35, I've got it in my head that the IS will be better on the 24-70, along with very slightly better IQ, when compared to the 24-105. But is it worth the sacrifice of extra FL?

70mm is right at the cusp of not enough FL for my use. Not enough would mean swapping out to the much heavier lens and I'm trying to avoid swapping. In saying that, I'm willing to compromise this if the stills image quality is that much better.

Please help my brain and advise me..

Thanks in advance

Seems to me the 24-105 is a no-brainer. On the 70D it woun't be wide enough, but certainly longer (168mm).

I think neither the 24-70 or the 24-105 is weather sealed, as both extend on zooming. Something to keep in mind. I dont know of any weather sealed general purpose zoom.

From what I've heard the 24-70 is better at the wide end while the 24-105 is better at tele. You already have a very good ultrawide, so I would lean towards the 24-105 in your case.

Don't worry too much about weather sealing you can always get a jacket for whichever lens you use. I love the 24-105mm, it is my walk about lens I use it for 80% of my photos. As I read on here in another post ..... I like zooming with the lens not with my feet. You will get the extra reach (105 x 1.6) = 168 mm but you'll compromise at the wide end to (24 x 1.6) 38mm but you appear to have lenses that cover the wide angles.

You answered your own question right there. Get the 24-105L.

The 24-70 f2.8 and 24-105 f4 are weather sealed. I have the 24-70 2.8, and it has a rubber gasket on the body mount (and I assume it has some barriers around the zoom mechanism).

I have used or owned all the lenses mentioned below.

IMHO:

Get two lenses.

On the crop, I'd use the 18-135 STM.

On the full frame, I'd use the 24-105.

The 18-135 STM is better for video.

For stills, the 24-105 is much better on FF than it is on the crop and better than the 18-135 STM is on the crop.

I would not bother spending more to use the 24-105 on the crop.

You can get mint used copies of both of these lenses for less than what a new 24-70 f/4 IS would cost you.

If 55mm was not long enough for you, I doubt 70 would make that much difference anyway.

I have the 24-70 2.8 and the 24-105. Contrary to what I expected, I find the 24-105 a better choice in most situations. Its AF is spectacular even in rather low light and I love the IS. I use the 24-70 mostly where I need the highest focus precision or DoF control (both due to the wider max aperture). Actually I wouldn't mind having an even longer FL on the 24-105 but it gets the job done. At $600 it's the best value in zoom lenses today. IMHO.

I have the same dilemma, I'm leaning towards the 24-105 for the extra reach plus I can buy it £100 cheaper than the 24-70 but I'm put off by all the 'Error 1' posts I've read.

I don't see the purpose of buying a 24-70 f/4 instead of the 24-105 (which is an f/4 too), but i see very well the purpose to buy the 24-70 f/2.8 instead of the 24-105
Having said that, i regret to have not bought the 24-70 f/2.8 instead of the 24-105, but i do not regret at all to have bought the 24-105 instead of the 24-70 f/4

When people got a problem with a lens they complain a lot, the same people can open many thread in many forum just to tell how they are unhappy and list all the problems they got, at the opposite side, people who are happy or never encounter a problem will not cross post everywhere nor even open a thread just to say "i am happy with this lens" ;)
Personally, i never heard about "Error 1" with this lens :-)

Thanks very much for the input guys.

I was very keen on the 105, but some of the reports on the 70 f4 really got me thinking. The more I read, the more confused I got. But these responses have cemented my decision to stick with the 105.
