Parts List:

90 inch wide bleached white muslin, 3 yards long - cost $10.32 from Walmart
Rit Dye - cost $1.50

Tools:

large measuring cup
spray bottle
garden hose
washer
dryer

Instructions:

Wash muslin in washing machine

Mix 12 oz hot water and 1/2 packet of dye, dissolve all powder completely.

Fill spray bottle with dissolved dye mixture.

Lay muslin out flat on lawn. Spray with garden hose so soak completely.

Spray muslin on mist setting to unevenly cover muslin as desired.

Spray muslin with garden hose if needed to keep wet.

Add darker accents with spray bottle on stream setting.

Wait a few minute to allow dye to spread.

Run muslin through dryer on high to fix dye.

Just to be safe run load of dark towels through dryer to clean up dye.

I have seen several sites on how to dye your own, based on the quality and price of the commercial ones I have seen, I figured I would give it a shot. I am very happy with the results.

I would skip the dye, seems the cloth comes in thousands of patterns and colors.

I did this also and it came out very well. I didnt use muslin though, I used a fabric called Drill. heavier than muslin but lighter than canvas. I didnt wet it down with garden hose first but it came out fine.
