If you already own a 17mm ts-e and 5D3 but you find the 17mm too wide for landscapes, which is a better upgrade:

1) Sell the 5D3 and buy the 5DSr. Keep the 17mm and crop in post.
2) Keep the 5D3, sell the 17mm and buy the 24mm.

Tex.
That sure is a tough one.
I have the 5D Mark III and the TS-E 24 Mark II.
Love it!
It went to Rome last month as well as Paris and Dublin last year. I use it primarily for the shift capability.
Sure there are times when I wish the focal length was wider......and then again longer.
Since you are familiar with the TS-E 17 on the 5D Mark III, on average about how much do you feel you need to crop (% of Pixels) to achieve your desired look?
Taking that crop percentage on the 5DSr may be close to the 5D Mark III with out additional cropping.
Then again, your 5D Mark III with a TS-E 24 may be that desired look you are looking for.
Why have to crop more if not needed.
This really is a tough one.
When I went to my first TS-E lens, the choices were the 17 or the 24. It really came down to which one first. Since the versatility of the 24 outweighed the 17, I went with the 24.
Look at it this way.
Option two may be less expensive.....
Or option three, just add the 24 TS-E and keep both the 5D Mark III AND the TS-E 17.....

On second thought, the idea of cropping, as a matter of principal, doesn't sit well with me. I know medium format shooters crop all the time--in fact, that's a major draw for medium format, but it just feels wrong. Better I guess to have a lens for every job.

If this is an option financially, why not sell the 5D3 and 17mm, and get a 5DSr and 24mm? Then you have the higher resolution camera and the focal length you want?

It's a hypothetical question. I actually own a 24mm ts-e and I'm debating whether to get a 17mm ts-e for interiors or to get a RRS multi-row pan rig for my 24mm ts-e (a topic for another day). I could've phrased the question: Who opted to upgrade their camera instead of purchases another lens?

When i bought 24 TS-E first i loved it and still but it killed me as i wanted wider all the time, good i went with 24 first, because TS-E 17 became the favorite lens, and if i got it first then i may not buy 24TSE after that, now i have both lenses i never look back, i just need newer body, still happy with A7R, but i am a megapixel guy so i need one of those either 40 or 50mp with 35mm digital and ignore medium format for a while.

If i were in your situations i think getting 17mm is better, you can use 1.4x and you get closer to 24 but not same f stop, even 34 with 2x, there is a member here using his 24TS-E with 2x a lot and still amazing results, so with 17mm if you can use TC then it will be a good idea [I don't know if TCs is compatible with Canon TS-E17].

None of the TS-E lenses are intended to be extender compatible, so aperture values will not be correct.
But they work anyway. You can use the extenders on the TS-E 24 mm and get pictures, just as you can with the TS-E 17 mm.
