Ok, so whilst in Buenos Aries i had my 50D and Tamron 17-50 lens stolen, although i found Argentina to be fantastic still :-)

I was very content with my 50D, i had been using it for 5 years or more and was quite comfortable with it. The Tamron was like wise good but it was beginning to fall apart...... (As the new 'owner' will find out)

I think i am happy enough to replace it with a 70D, although i am will to listen to arguments that suggest otherwise.

My biggest issue is the lens.

I found the 17-50 a little limiting at the long end and would like to get something that does wide and a bit longer but is as good or better than my Tamron was. Its for general use and travelling. I have a Canon 100-400L for when i want to get all long distance.

I don't really follow the 'scene' so am not sure what my options are :-)

Cheers

Nev

Hey Nev, sorry about the 50D and gear. I think if you want something as close to the 50D as you can get in functionality, and add a few modern touches, the 70D may be the way to go. Better frame rate, MUCH BETTER AF, better ISO performance all for about $800 (sorry, not familiar with exchange rates and such). Budgetary issues may allow you to go to the 7D2, which is overkill if the 50D basically worked for you. At the other end, the original 7D and the 60D are both going for way less than they are worth these days - $450-$500 for one in good condition.

If you need f/2.8 on a crop camera, I can't help. If you need a good general purpose lens with a bit more range than the 17-50, consider the EFs 15-85. That was my goto lens on the 60D until I changed my primary shooter to the 6D. My philosophy is that if you need versatility and range, forget the expense of fast f/2.8 zooms and buy a consumer zoom that works for you. If you need aperture, forget the fast f/2.8 zooms and buy a consumer-grade prime, or step up to L-primes, if you've got the resources (I don't). My 28 1.8, 35IS, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and 135L are all at least a stop faster than any Canon zoom available. I am not positive, but I'd bet money that all of them are sharper fro f/2.8-f/5 than any zoom Canon makes. The all have their own set of compromises (mushy corners, NONE, erratic AF & fragile, CA, no IS - respectively) but that's the way I roll.

You'll be happy with the 70D and the 18-135 STM. Body only = $999 USD. With the lens included, the cost is $1,299 USD.

No, the lens is not as fast as what you are used to. If you are not satisfied, sell the lens for a profit.

^^^ this is a good recommendation

70D is much better than 60D, would definitely do that. 24-105 f4L is a good lens too, depending.. probably heavy for walk around.

I'd recommend the 7DII if you are serious about wildlife/sports.. but not for a walk around camera if that is what you are use to. the weight difference between the 50D and 7DII is significant. the 70D is more suited to walk around/casual photography, but will still get the job done on sports and wildlife.

IF you have any hanker to go FF, the 6D body is around the $1000 mark - those in it for image quality love the camera, but it is center point for wildlife/sports - outer points are not cross type like the 50D is.

the 6DII will be out soon, probably at least announced in the next year if not on sale... but that will be priced way more than what you are looking at for the 70D.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

The lens is selling at just over $200 on E-bay. My guess is that lots of folks are paying an extra $400 for a lens they don't want, then selling it for much less just to unload it. Buy one of theirs. Don't pay $400 for that lens. I'm not contesting the IQ, just the price.

Oops. The body is $999 not $900. Sorry about that error. And yes pay the $300 to get a brand new one with a one year Canon warranty by buying it with the 70D kit.

I have edited my post.

Paying a bit more for a warranty vs. getting who-knows-what used makes good sense. I didn't check prices, sorry.

Heya,

I'd get another 50D ($300) or 7D ($450) and an 18-135 STM and call it a day. If you want even wider, the 15-85.

Very best,

As cheap as a 7D can be had these days, that's a whole lot of camera for the money.

if you want as wide as your tamron but longer, you'll have to give up the f2.8...if you just want a little more reach, there is the sigma 17-70f2.8-4OS...if that small amount won't do it for you, then i'd look at the 18-135STM

i think the 70D would do well for you

The weight different between the 7DII and the 50D is only 90g, or around 3 ounces. Not terribly significant IMHO. And I'm not sure why the 70D is more suited for walk around photography. It is less feature rich then the 7D II. Perhaps you meant that the 7DII with all its sports and action features and much higher price might be overkill for many potential purchasers.

My suggestion would be to get another 50D. That was my main body up until 2 years ago, and I believe it was, and still is, the best value for the money that you can find. What are they now, about $250 in decent condition? If you wanted to spend a little more, then a 7D would probably be the best bet. In either case, you're getting a lot more bang for your buck than you would with a 70D.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Some of what you get with the 70D that you do not get with the 50D:

Video

More focus points

A bit lighter

Less shutter lag

Better brighter LCD

HDR

Better battery

Flip out LCD

More coverage in viewfinders

Touch screen LCD

20MP vs 15MP

Uses SD cards

Don't forget MFA, DPAF, and full time focus tracking in video and LV. I agree, SD is an advantage over CF. No bent pins.

70D (greatest price point and feature set), however for a general use lens, you'll be giving up F2.8, which is pretty nifty in it's own right.

You'll have to pick up something like the 15-85 or 18-135, both are slowish lenses. You can pick up a 24mm pancake for your faster lens.
