I want to get a small camera for times when my 5DM3 is just too large to carry. I've been looking at the Sony's RX100 IV and am into the image quality and 4K video capabilities. I also want to buy an underwater housing for the camera to shoot stills and videos. I read somewhere that Canon released some model the is on par with the Sony's RX100 IV, though I have no idea what it is.

1. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Sony's RX100 IV vs. the Canon equivalent?
2. Any strong reasons to get one vs. the other?

Thanks.

I think the camera you're thinking of is the Canon G7X

Given the choice between the two with money being no object, I would go with the Sony simply for the built in EVF.

Neither. I am a big Canon fan and have owned most every DSLR they have made, don't care for their point and shoots. You should be looking at Olympus or Panasonic m43 cameras. Bigger sensor then the 1" in the Canon and Sony cameras and they are less expensive too. An E-M10 is only $500 right now and the mark ii is only $650. The $500 Olympus PEN E-PL7 is great too. If you want one with a fixed lens, the Panasonic LX100 with its 4/3" sensor and the Leica lens is fantastic.

For once we can agree, the LX100 is a solid alternative..

If we're going beyond what's mentioned by OP, I would recommend the Nikon Coolpix A or Ricoh GR as well. Both sport an APS-C sensor and fixed 28mm equivalent lens and are very pocket-able.

How small do you want? Personally I found the Sony to be a great pocket camera (I'm using the RX100 III right now). The EVF is a huge feature for me; I had the original RX100 and my biggest complaint was using the camera in bright sunlight; the LCD becomes almost unreadable, and just composing a photo was difficult (forget trying to adjust settings). For me the RX100 is the biggest "pocket camera" I can use; anything bigger doesn't fit in a jeans pocket (I actually noticed the difference between the RX100 and the RX100 III; the III is thicker, and a little harder to pocket).

If you're willing to go a little bigger (like coat pocket size instead of jeans pocket), then the LX100 looks like a nice camera, or a m4/3 ILC like dexter75 suggested, or a Sony A6000.

Going larger gets you a better camera at a lower price; it's all a trade-off, so you just need to decide where you fall in the price/quality/portability scale.

I would definitely look at the RX100 iv. It just lives in a small pouch on my belt 24-7. It's the camera I have with me at all times. The images are fabulous (I have the version ii so I don't have the EVF on mine). I would upgrade in a heartbeat. It's almost the same time as my older Canon S-90 but a far superior camera.
