Tethering a 1D Mk3 to a smartphone just for viewing images??

This may be a stupid question, a bit out of my knowledge base. I've search the net and not found many answers outside using a wireless setup and extra equipment.

Can I connect my 1D Mk3 through the USB connection on the camera and then mate that with a USB to Micro connector into my phone (Galaxy S4 Active) to review shots?
The reasoning behind this is the small screen on the camera isn't cutting it for me sometimes. I'd like to be able to mount a Joby Grip Mount bracket into the hotshoe, mount my phone to it and view taken images that way. Or use a larger Note 4 I may purchase.

I have read there are several apps to view and control from your phone, but will this setup at least for for viewing? I've downloaded Helicon Remote to my phone but before running out to buy cables, should I even both or do I need a more sophisticated setup??

Thanks in advance for all feedback!

Here's (external link) the compatibility list for DSLR Controller (about $10 in the Google Play Store, IIRC). It does (mostly) support the 1D3; I'm not sure about using it just to review your shots without being in LV shooting mode; I've never tried to use it that way. I can review my images no problem when I'm using it as a remote capture controller. It runs on the S3 Mini and S5, as well as my Tab 3 8". I use it wirelessly via the TP Link MR3040 router (around $40), but it does work with all three of the above and an OTG cable from NewEgg, so your S4 should work fine with the OTG. Again, whether it will let you just review images while not using LV shooting, I don't know. I really should try it one day.

I also use DSLRcontroller app on my Note3 but not tried as a viewer. It seems to automatically turn on live view and control the camera. If all you want to do is view why not buy an eyefi card and send small jpg files to your SD card and raw to a cf card. You'd just need to wait a few seconds for the small jpg to be sent to your phone

Thanks for the feedback! I never thought about the EyeFi card idea. Since I'm mostly shooting enviro portraits, I just need a larger view than the little screen and check focus.

I tested the 1D Mk3 with an Eye-Fi pro 32 GB SD-Card.

If you stay within 3 feet then transfer is possible.
I did not test the transfer speed for JPG only on an Android.
This weekend I will test that.

Best way is you have to invest on Canon WFT,
it will work with more range and efficiency than other systems,
and if it is disconnect for some reason, it will reconnect automatically,
not as silly as 6D and 70D wifi that is so stupid, it won't auto reconnect like WFT

sorry, no stupid speedlite from Canon !

I would not judge a shoot off a smartphone screen. Most of my work is done on location, tethered to a MBP with 27" Apple Display and I'll leave the display home on smaller shoots. Refurbished 11" MacBook Air's for under $800 but I would think that would be a minimal setup.

The reviews on wifi enabled SD cards are not good but if they improve, I can see using one and the CaptureOne mobile app on an iPad to view images.

This weekend I will test that.

Installed EyeFi Mobi on the Android and tried some pictures.
Set the 1D3 to JPG only.
I could not get the pictures transfer to the Android without some kind of manual action(s).
Also the WiFi connection did not feel stable.
So as a WiFi external viewer it is a no-go for me.
I might have done something wrong, who knows.

I do not have an OTG cable otherwise I could have tried DSLRdashboard.info on the Android.

I had to order an otg cable for my 7d so I can run Slingshot. If it gets here soon I'll let you know how it works. Slingshot does WiFi and USB.

Can't speak for the 1d but my Galaxy Tab E running DSLRDashboard and hooked up to my D610 will preview raw files within 30 seconds, which I don't think is too bad. JPEGs are up within 5-10 seconds.

I know DSLRController for Canon also does this with JPEGS and RAW but whether that works better with the 1D than Dashboard I don't know.

I'm pretty sure you can turn the LV function of DSLRController off. ;) Tapping the mode field should do it.

I use DSLR controller app to micro adjust focusing for focus stacking macro images. Much much easier than trying to slightly turn the focus ring by hand.
