Im a total novice as far as flash is concerned and dont understand settings at all, My question is for family get togethers only, is there a sort of all in one setting that i can use on my 7D and 550 flash for indoor use only with my family thank you...Ray

If you want an "all-in-one" setting then just put the 7D on P mode, the Flash on ETTL/Zoom Auto.

Point it towards the ceiling as a bounce is more pleasing than direct. I would also get a diffuser.
