5DIII Lenses?

Shortly about to upgrade the 7D to a 5DIII and (probably because it's bundled with one) a 24-105 f4.

Will probably sell the 7D and 18-135, but will keep the 100-400L

Also looking at a Sigma 50mm f1.4

Anyone used these lenses on the 5DIII and can give feedback re usability, fit for purpose, quality etc?

Not doing much motorsport now so long reach and high frame rate not so necessary, more interested in FF and a nice 50mm for street stuff...

I realise...now...that this should probably have gone in the lens section, sorry.

If you are not shooting Motorsports much anymore have you considered the 6D? If you don't need high frame rate and sophisticated AF then I prefer the sensor of the 6D, I also appreciate the lighter weight and smaller size.

I used the 24-105 L IS for quite a while and found it pretty good, especially at today's bundle prices. Earlier this year I sold my 24-105 to help fund a Canon 24-70 F2.8 L V2 which is a significantly better lens for my uses - but much more expensive!

Looking at UK high street prices a 5D3 + 24-105 L IS bundle is more expensive than a 6D plus a 24-70 F2.8 L V2 - I would prefer the latter setup. The 5D3 is an excellent "do it all" camera whilst the 6D is more limited in it's range of strengths, but if you don't need the frame rate and more sophisticated AF then I find the 6D to be a better camera - if you do then the 5D3 is the better option.

Just my thoughts.

The 24-105 f/4 is probably my most used lens. I bought it used through Lensrentals. I've taken over 21,000 photos with it. It is my absolute GoTo lens. I bought my 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L used back in the spring of this year (also through Lensrentals), and have taken about 2,200 photos with that lens, some high school sports, some just high school marching band. I was hesitant at first, but it's a great lens! I don't have the Sigma, but I have the Canon 50 f/1.4, and I like it. It's a great lens for getting really shallow DoF. I've seen really good reviews of the Sigma, so going with Sigma is probably fine. That said, I've used both the 24-105 and the 50 for street work in NYC, and the 24-105 I've found to be much more flexible.

I probably could swing the 24-70 2.8, but there's only so far I can get the wife to bend...and it might mean losing out of the 50 1.4 which I'm really keen on. Also, the 24-105 would compliment the 100-400 nicely...

Another question for 5DIII owners (and maybe other model owners too, now I think about it), battery grips...like or not?

I'm looking to get one of those too, for portrait oriented shooting, figured it'd be handy...yes, no?

I use a grip because I was doing a lot of portrait oriented photography, fashion primarily. While I do little fashion work now, I still like the grip for portrait oriented photos. The grip makes it very easy to keep the camera steady. I also like the flexibility of going between the Canon batteries and AA batteries, especially if I have a few events on a weekend. When I want to go light weight, the grip comes off easily.

I used to own a Fuji Finepix S2Pro (many moons ago, back when 6MP was huge, and their reading off of each end to extrapolate a 12MP image was enormous).

This Body was built in Battery grip style...I did like it and am not worried about the weight, I normally have the 100-400 on the 7D at full zoom so I'm used to heavy equipment.

As far as the grip is concerned, I don't use them. Too much added weight to an already heavy kit for photographing in the backcountry/wilderness areas of NH.

I prefer the extra weight at the back, especially when shooting with a long lens like the 100-400 or now my Sigma 150-600 C. Actually I even like the balance with my "normal" zoom, a Sigma 20-40 f/2.8 EX DG, which is a bit of a weighty lens being an FF super wide zoom. I'm shooting with a 50D body, so not as lightweight as a 60D or 70D, or even the 6D, but a little lighter than a 5D. I found it even more useful for that back when I shot a 300D though.

I have 5D Mk II and 5D Mk III. I sold all of my lenses except the 28 1.8, 50 1.8 STM, 85 f/1.8, 16-35 f/4L IS, 24-105 f/4L IS and 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS. Sold the 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4, and 40 STM when I bought the 50 f/1.8 STM. Love that lens! If I could only have one lens, it would be that one. Second choice would be the 24-105 f/4L IS.

I play second shooter at weddings, do some landscapes, and chase the kiddos. I love a grip on my 5dIII. I hardly ever put a 2nd battery in it--I'm mainly using it just for the extra surface area to grab onto. I have a Vello brand. I tried Adorama's Flashpoint and it gave me tons of problems on the 6D. The Vello has had a spaz attack a few times, but never ruined a shoot. I don't use slings, straps, bras, etc. I just find they get in the way. Knock on wood: i haven't dropped the camera yet.

As to lenses, you really need to get detailed about what you want to shoot and what % of the time. When I made the big leap to full frame with the 6D I was still a hobbyst and so the 24-70 F/4L IS w/macro was a decent overall lens for me. IS is nice for twilight landscapes and indoor shots of well behaved kids. For shooting unruly (my) kids and weddings I would trade it for a 24-70 f/2.8 II + cash if I could. IS is useless with moving targets and I shoot most of my landscape shots on my 16-35 f4L IS anyway. 35-70mm is kind of boring for landscapes anyway.

Oh yeah. I have a 50mm f/1.2L and 85mm f/1.8 for shallow DOF shots and it sure is fun.

Yep, that's what I'm looking for, shallow DOF and, despite using an SLR for almost 30 years now, i've never owned a 50mm...bout time I reckon.
