Is this true? If yes, is there a workaround?

Yes.

Several of the 3rd party triggers add SCS back into the mix. eg Yn 622Cs (no Groups with SCS) & Phottix Odins.

Would this work... Stick a Canon speedlite (580exii or 600ex-rt) on the camera hot shoe. Then plug a 3rd party trigger (PCB CST) into the on-camera speedlite's PC port or into the camera's own PC port. Then fire away. I'm thinking this might work as long as there is a Canon speedlite mounted on the camera hotshoe. No?

Hi, Well, first the Speedlite's pc socket is 'in-coming only'.

I tried using the camera's pc out - but with my setup, I got first curtain sync through the camera's pc outlet, even while the hot-shoe flash was operating in SCS (ETTL or M).

You could use a long 5 pin off-cam cord - but the wireless options above are better.

The Yongnuo YN-E3-RT transmitter has Wireless Rear Curtain sync capability in Manual mode only (NO ETTL or <GR> mode). You can trigger a 600EX-RT directly or a non RT EX Speedlite with a YNE3-RX receiver.

What can the Phottix Laso do that the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT can't do? Do I get what I pay for?

So far I cannot find where it does wireless rear curtain sync for one which is the basis of this thread. It states wireless HSS and 1st curtain sync but no where does it state wireless rear curtain sync. It is also 1/3 higher in price for the transmitter and twice as much in cost for the receiver than the Yongnuo's.

One thing worth noting is that the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT transmitter also allows for use of the Wireless <Gr> Mode when using DSLR's older than the Canon 5DmIII.

It looks like it does have Second Curtain Sync but only for EOS camera models after 2012. Also, it looks like it can control flash zoom wirelessly, unlike the YN-E3-RT.

This is what I use. I have 2 600ex-rts and a yne3-Rx connected to my strobe triggered by a yn-e3-rt and it does rear/2nd curtain just fine in manual mode. But is true the yo-e3-rt can not remotely control the zoom on the flashes. That's the only thing that I wish the yongnuo could do, but really no biggie

It's stroboscope modeling light should compensate for its lack of remote zoom control.

Yes I do have to say the modeling light feature has come in handy a couple of times.

I guess my question is that for the extra money one would spend, what can the Laso do better than the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT/YNE3-RX combo? Does it provide for <Gr> mode in older DSLR's like the YN-E3-RT?

All I can say is read the manual before buying anything. Or else...

Oh no... doesn't work with my camera,
What the....doesn't do high speed sync in group mode,
Jeez....No rear curtain sync with off-camera flash,
Darn...Focus assist beam is not centered,
etc. etc.

Does anybody use the YN-E3-RT transmitter with YN-600-E3-RT speedlites combined with studio strobes while shooting rear curtain? How do you pull it off? There has to be a way to fire two separate triggers while in 2nd curtain sync: one trigger for studio strobes and the other (YN-E3-RT) for the speedlites. (oh, by he way don't get the Canon 600ex-rt if you shoot with 5D Mark2 because you won't be able to mix TTL (for on-camera flash) with remote manual groups. It's a mine field I tell ya.

The Odin / Mitros +'Plus' system will do what you want - Canon bodies only enact SCS, assuming it's set appropriately, at 1/30th & slower.
