Here is the link to MS MicrosoftCameraCodecPack-x64. When installed it will display most RAW files automatically in Windows Explorer etc.

Link
Download Microsoft Camera Codec Pack (6.3.9721.0) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Yeh, the codec is free and if you haven't done so you should install it, BUT the images you see in Explorer, Photo Viewer, etc are the jpg made by the camera expressly for this purpose and so you shouldn't think it is the Raw image and you should keep in mind that the jpg might be misleading if you are seeking information about the Raw data itself rather than just a thumbnail for simply identifying the file.

The link is bad; leads to a "not found" page.

On a side note, I do wish the Microsoft would actually do something about the lack of integrated software in Windows, OS X has had built-in viewing for almost every format you can throw at it for a while now, while you still need add-ons for Windows.

The preview function actually caught me by surprise when I first came from using Windows 7, I was like "wait, you can preview any file you want?" and then I pressed the space bar and realized you could also check the contents as well.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I've been using this for years, it's great and free: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm (external link)
It has handled any RAW format I've thrown at it.

There are many fine viewers out there. That is not the issue. What the codec does is show the RAW when you click a folder (yes it is a jpg attached to the RAW), but you can at;east see them. That lets you pick and move WITHOUT having to switch back and forth and remember file names. SHeesh folks it's a tool that makes MS better automatically, doing what Windows should do on install.

Faststone lets you pick, move, rename like Explorer does, but your point is still valid.
