Your post simply shows that a lack of understanding and care can't be overcome by buying the celebrity endorsed flash thingumybob.

The next thing to buy us the book 'the speedlighters handbook' or actually read the strobist blog in detail rather than trying to cut corners buying crap white things.

I think the OP made it clear they didn't understand why the photo didn't turn out the way they anticipated.

It seems OP is looking for some help with how to use the "crap white thing" properly, or for other recommendations.

Belittling OP isn't probably going to help...but I could be wrong, perhaps being publicly ridiculed is what helped you become a better photographer?

So you edited the bit out where I gave (very good) advice just to have a pop! But it's me that's doing the public ridicule?

Well done! That's a twisted view of the world you have. :)

I think what he was saying is that is seems pretty clear that you didn't read the thread before commenting.

i've been known to do the same.

OP was just looking for hints, which you did in fact give with the book rec.

it's almost friday y'all. :D

Yeah I don't see it. Maybe it is on the production line and he doesn't want to say anything. Giving GF a run for his money :-)

If you had left it at suggesting the speedlighters handbook and the strobist blog...I definitely would not have had anything to say. They are excellent resources.

I personally don't feel that giving a good suggestion AFTER taking a shot at someone makes it ok.

Maybe I'm too new at this, but I don't understand why the photography profession seems to be filled with people who have so much disdain for newcomers who want to learn and improve. A commonly heard response is "if you are even asking this question, you have no business even holding a camera".

Perhaps after 20 years of photography, I'll look at newbies in the same fashion. I hope not, because I certainly won't know it all by then.

I still haven't (in this thread!)

For the OP...

  1. The white thing is not much larger than the unaltered flash...it will scarcely make the light any 'softer' all by itself (that is, used without a ceiling to bounce and serve as a very large virtual light source)
  2. The white thing is to the left of the axis of the lens when you put your camera into Portrait orientation -- resulting in a shadow (just as harsh as without the white thing) which is to camera right (see point 1)

You did not mention which camera body you use. It used to be true (about 10 years ago, in the days of the 5D, and 20D/30D that Canon ETTL flash chonically underexposed and just about everyone found it necessary to use FEC (about +1EV of it) to get a proper exposure out of the camera and not need LR to brighten things! Then when the 40D camera long, miracle of miracles you no longer had to automatically dial in FEC just to get a good exposure. And while Canon ETTL seems to handle ceiling bounce just fine, it does seem to do some weird things with some light modifiers, and we cannot seem to explain why or when this happens, even after extensive testing. So, dial in FEC, just like we did 'in the old days'.

I think you've misunderstood my post, I put hundreds of hours a year into helping newbies, sometimes though, the message can be blunt.

The blunt message is 'stop wasting your money on gizmo's and learn how light works'. It might sound like tough love, but it's completely correct. There's plenty of explanation prior to my response for why the OP wasn't getting the expected result, if there hadn't been, I'd have added it. :)

I'm up for tough love...absolutely necessary many times. And I totally agree with you...learning about light is vital to improving one's photography.

You're probably right...it's likely I misunderstood your tone from the start. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

...This book is very good as well. ...

Should point out that there's going to be a second edition (external link) (out in November), which NVN's updated. To quote from the website (external link):

... One way in which this book has been radically changed from the first edition, is that it is now more of a work-book. There are several examples where you have to have your camera (and flash) in your hands, to step through the instruction. All the better to make sense of flash photography, and become confident in the use of flash photography.
