i'm surprised it took so long for Wilt to whip out the feta container.

I still haven't (in this thread!)
For the OP...
- The white thing is not much larger than the unaltered flash...it will scarcely make the light any 'softer' all by itself (that is, used without a ceiling to bounce and serve as a very large virtual light source)
- The white thing is to the left of the axis of the lens when you put your camera into Portrait orientation -- resulting in a shadow (just as harsh as without the white thing) which is to camera right (see point 1)
You did not mention which camera body you use. It used to be true (about 10 years ago, in the days of the 5D, and 20D/30D that Canon ETTL flash chonically underexposed and just about everyone found it necessary to use FEC (about +1EV of it) to get a proper exposure out of the camera and not need LR to brighten things! Then when the 40D camera long, miracle of miracles you no longer had to automatically dial in FEC just to get a good exposure. And while Canon ETTL seems to handle ceiling bounce just fine, it does seem to do some weird things with some light modifiers, and we cannot seem to explain why or when this happens, even after extensive testing. So, dial in FEC, just like we did 'in the old days'.
