I shoot with a Full Frame and a general walk around zoom. I currently shoot a 6D and 24-105L, but all of the photos below are from one show (Offset Kings) this past summer shot with my old D600 and 24-85 VR. As mentioned, a CPL is possibly the single most important piece of equipment here.
The important part of car shows is the people. They are who build the cars, they are who admire the cars, and they are who we take the photos for. I always try to get photos of people in their enviornment interacting with their cars (washing/waxing/putting stickers on/etc).

I get bored of the typical straight on photos that most people take. I typically don't tend to take too many photos of details unless they really stand out. A BMW symbol on a car is the same on every BMW, I would rather showcase the whole car. However, I do like custom built parts and racecar type parts. So I do usually focus more on those details than on typical show cars.
With that said, I try to frame my photos with some foreground or background objects. You can see below I used the people walking down the road to bring the eye directly to the car. I used the silver car on the right to draw the eye down the side and to the 350z, and finally used a window frame to outline the photo and focus on the STI.

As I mentioned before, people are really the most important, and I always love kids who come to the shows. The trend with slammed/stanced wagons and strollers always makes me smile, and I always take a few photos of those.

And finally, this is the most common angle that I shoot cars at. It shows off the car, and when cars are parked at an angle, you are able to isolate the car from the cars surrounding it.
