All too true. However not in the context of that poster's photo. ;-)a He achieved a decent result and explained a bit about the circumstances under which the shot was taken. So my hat comes off for him.

Personally, I wish I could pull out my 60" Softlighter or my 48" Ricebowl or some other modifier at EVERY shoot for gorgeous soft shadows and gentle falloff. But for a lot of reasons I'm glad I have tiny modifiers for occasions when I absolutely need to be quicker, or more mobile, or have space constraints, or have an impatient client with limited time, or a piece of gear fails and totally negates use of the "better" modifier.

When the photographer actually gets the shot, it's more productive to just let this stuff go. There are other opportunities to be more helpful with alternate suggestions.

Perhaps you missed the part of the discussion where the comments you have an issue about were directed at guys using the flashbender as a softboxes on a stand. Those comments were not directed to the OPs test shots at all.

Nope. I got the comments, the context, and the order in which they were issued. It's good to know you weren't blasting the OP's efforts as silly or worthless, even though it seemed that way since he was using a Flashbender on a stand. :-)

The best thing about forums like this is the petri dish of options that individuals try out in a variety of circumstances, and watching the arc of progress they go through over time is also part of the process.

Exactly as I thought. The flashbender is as good a choice as you can get if forced to use on camera flash, not great but better than , any options. But once a stand comes into play its a different universe of choices and the flashbender is easily outpaced.

My bad in using the term "OP". Apologies. I was actually referring to the guy who posted a sample with four people on the couch. Things got a little weird at that point. ;)

You should also read where he did some significant editing to fix the shadows caused by the flashbender.

Saw it. Hence my earlier reference to the softer shadows and gentler fall-off of larger modifiers. Progress is a process.

But now we're re-hashing.
