This was an impromptu trip with zero planning beforehand. I heard about the launch from Wallops Island while driving home and decided to take an hour detour to the coast to see if I could capture anything worthwhile. I arrived to Oregon Inlet at roughly 6:15pm and had a little walk out to the point to set up. Unfortunately a launch time of 7:07pm left too much ambient light in the sky so I never saw the rocket but did catch a vapor cloud.

Here is how the vapor cloud first appeared in the sky. Unfortunately it was well outside of what I had framed for the launch timelapse, much higher off the horizon than I anticipated.

Here's a 100% crop of the cloud after it began to fade/disperse.

Thanks. We are lucky on the east coast to be able to view the launches from the Wallops Island Facility. I've seen one other launch from a vantage point on the outer banks, but never tried to photograph it. My exposure times were all over the place so I wish I had put a little more forethought into it and what to expect. The scheduled launch time was an estimate anytime between 7-9pm, so had it got pushed back another 45min to an hour all the stars would've been out and it would've been a much more exciting photograph.

But going in with zero expectations it was exciting to see/capture something.

Nice indeed.
We do get some very interesting post launch formations, specially at sunset, from a near by center (Vanderberg Air Force base) but its only incidental to see one. I wish Military would let us know ahead of time of their lunching schedule but that is one wish with a big capital "W".
