I can't find or maybe there isn't a way to do this. When on my back shooting to the sky for example is there a way to keep the view finder display in just landscape and not let it auto switch to portrait view? I was trying to take a shot the other day and the screen kept flipping from landscape to portrait and drove me nuts trying to compose my shot. I'm shooting with the 7D markII

Erm... don't turn the camera? lol

Setup Menu 1
Record func+card/folder sel.
Record func.: Auto switch card – once the first card fills up, it will overflow to the second one.
Record/play: 1 – you can select which card to start recording images first.
Folder: 100EOS7D – you can use an existing folder or create a new one where photos will be stored.
File numbering: Continuous – I want the camera to increment file numbers even if I change the memory card.
File name: IMG_ – you can set how you want files to be named.
Auto rotate: On (middle setting) – rotating vertical images in landscape view makes them appear much smaller. I prefer the camera to write the orientation to images, but not actually rotate them when displaying.
Format card – used for formatting the inserted memory card.

I think that auto rotate function is only for playback.

how do you mean in the viewfinder? does the 7DII have a evf?

Only info i can find:

Orientation sensor Yes
Auto rotation
On (recorded and LCD display)
On (recorded only)
Off

Maybe someone with a 7DII will come along OR you could just try it and see if it works?

What i mean is when you are looking through the eye piece not on the LCD screen i want the camera to not sense when I rotate the body. It seems that when the camera is pointed straight up it gets confused as to which position its in. If that makes sense?

so what moves? how do you know it is getting confused? does it change the rotation of the picture when you have it on the computer? does it show it in the wrong orientation when viewing it in playback? Does it move the information bits in the viewfinder to a different side?

What is the difference you are seeing in the viewfinder when you rotate the body? If it is just switching AF points then there should be a custom function for that in the auto focus control menu.

Could it be this?

"Other changes to the camera setup for Auto Focus
On the fourth AF sub-menu, I changed “Orientation linked AF Point” Press the Set button and scroll down to “Separate AF Pts: Area+pts. Press set to chose this.
This allows the AF Points to be separate when in horizontal or vertical modes. Which means the active AF Point could be at the top of the frame for vertical shots and the active AF Points in the center of the frame for horizontal shots.
Also, this means I can have different AF Areas Selection Modes active. I could be shooting Snow Geese in a horizontal orientation and have the camera on Zone AF, then switch to vertical, have the active point at the top of the frame and be in AF Point Expansion (4)."

If so, more info here:

my auto focus points keep changing from landscape to portrait mode while i'm looking through the view finder. I did have my orientation linked AF point set to Separate AF pts which more than likely is is the culprit now that I think about it.
