This week's speed challenge theme is plants. Whether it be flora, fauna or foliage get out and capture the colors of nature in your area!


This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time Friday, 16 October 2015. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera: Any DSLR Camera. UPDATE: Any DIGITAL CAMERA is allowed, not just DSLR
2. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size: Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post Processing: Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting: ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge. Camera model & lens used. Post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting: No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8. Have questions, PM me. I will have no/limited internet access Saturday, 10 Oct. or Sunday, 11 Oct.
9. Have FUN!

Quick update to the rules: ANY digital camera can be used, so as to allow for more participation.

So if anyone has a P&S, mirrorless, etc. feel free to contribute.

Ok, this challenge is now closed. Thank you to everyone for participating. Before I announce my choice for this week’s winner I would like to go over what I liked about each of your entries.


Benitoite: I really like how you were able to show the texture on the petals/leaf and stem, and your choice of shooting the reverse side of the flower to show a bit more of its overall structure.

darkslinger: You’ve got an interesting take on the theme, showing the designs on the petals while omitting color. The backlighting and shadows around the stem look like a Rorschach.

EnglishBob: Cool close-up. I really like how the leaves are stretching upwards, drawing in as much light as they can.

teekay: The colors in your shot really pop! I like how you’ve cropped close so all the spread out petals dominate the frame.

Jason C: Great shot showing the dismaying side of nature and its conflict with urbanization. I also like how the hatching in the grate “points” to the dead leaves, directing the viewer’s attention.

Voaky999 (Don): Great capture. It’s really cool how the transitions from orange to yellow in the petals and yellow to green along the stems just flow so smoothly and blend well with, while also standing apart from, the background.

lavanut (Lisa): Great composition and framing. I really like how the dewdrops on all those blades of grass catch the light and make the scene a bit dreamy.

You're welcome. I'm a bit intrigued on how you got what seems to be such a shallow DOF at f/16; I guess I've still got a LOT to learn
