Did we lose important editing history from the old v-bulletin based POTN?

.
.

When going back and searching thru old posts from the v-bulletin days, I can not seem to find any info on whether the posts were edited or not. There are some posts that I know I edited several times, and yet there is nothing on the sidebar or beneath the post (or anywhere else) that says that I edited the post.*

Of particular interest to me is the original post by Chris Searles in his thread "Why Photograph Wildlife":
https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=1235874&page=1
It seems to me that it is reading differently now than it did when I first read it in October of 2012. But I'm not sure.....maybe he didn't ever edit it. My memory fails me at times, and that is why I would like to be able to have access to the thingy that told us what posts were edited and how many times they were edited. This feature works great on the new posts made in AMASS, but we seem to have maybe lost such records for posts that were made prior to AMASS.

Anyway, I would really like to know if Chris edited his post at some point, and if so, at what point he did so.

*Maybe the editing history is there, and I'm just not seeing it. If so, please tell me where it is located.

Right. Yes, of course.

I am talking about posts that were written prior to December of 2014, back when POTN used v-bulletin software, before it was transferred to AMASS. Can you see editing info for posts that were written 2 years ago? 5 years ago? That is the information I am trying to find.

We lost the information about the last time a post had been edited (and by whom), but that isn't necessarily "important information". Most edits tend to be for trivial issues like spelling errors. vBulletin didn't save the various revisions of a post, so all that could come over was the latest version.

As to the specific post you're wondering about, if he edited it it had to be very shortly after he posted it; Numenorean quoted him just about 15 hr. later, and the quote doesn't read any different from the original.

Thank you for clearing that up, Jon.

Thanks for that observation. That shows why there can be value to quoting a post, even if quoting it doesn't seem necessary at the time. Quoting gives a record of what the poster had written, so that we still can reference their exact words even if they have edited or removed the post. That is very important to me.

So, based on the info you have provided, we know that Chris has most likely not edited his post after Numenorean quoted him. That is useful to me, because I wanted to see if perhaps Chirs edited his post in response to some of the replies. In other words, I wondered whether Chris wrote his original post, then got a reply, and the reply got him thinking a little differently about the topic, and that in turn got him thinking that perhaps he should re-write his first post. Now I know that he may have edited it based on a reply that he received within the first 15 hours, but that it is very unlikely that he edited it after Numenorean's reply.

Post https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=15093155 has never been edited.

I still have the old info available, although it has not been ported. Only 5% of those included some editing reason at all, and there was no log of what was really edited, so I decided to leave them out (the time was hectic, no extra work needed :))

Wow - that's so cool that you are able to look that stuff up!

Thanks for the info. I think about that thread all the time, yet only seldom do I go back and look it up. Knowing that the way it reads now is the same as when Chris first posted it gives me greater respect for his viewpoint; (although I disagree with some of what he says in that post).
