I wonder if Canon will make a 50 with IS, such as a 50 f/2 IS? That would be awesome. It could replace the 50 1.8II.

It is a good question why Canon seems to not put a lot of love into the 50mm focal length.

50mm is easily one of the most common focal lengths in the history of 35mm format. It was pretty much the "kit" lens. And it's one of the most general primes there is.

Yet, the 50mm's Canon has are ancient. Besides the only recently released budget 50mm F1.8 STM which does replace the 50 F1.8 II.

While Tamron drops a 45mm F1.8 VC on the market...

Awaiting Canon's 50 F1.4 IS (which will really be 50 F2 IS or something to keep it from being massive).

Very best,

And keeping it from being massively priced. It would be nice to see a 50 f/2 IS for under 300usd.

Well, a 50mm IS would fit the ranks of the 24mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2 IS. Canon did issue a patent a while back for a 58mm lens (http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-canon-ef-58mm-f1-4/) (external link), so maybe it's going to be a 58mm f/1.4 with or without IS?

In any case, you can expect the price to be around 600-800 usd because those are the launch prices of the 24 and 35, and at something like 300 usd Canon would be stealing customers from their very own 50mm f/1.8 STM. They're not going to have two competing products at the same price.

Good point. For now if IS is needed on 50mm just use a monopod, when possible.

Canon is pretty stingy with IS for all it's wide angle and "normal" lenses with 2.8 or faster apertures. Doubt the 50mm would be the first...

Stingy? Let me mention the 24 f2.8 IS, 28mm IS and 35 f2 IS. The 50mm would fall nicely into that line of prime lenses, including the price bracket. There is also the 16-35 f4 IS.

The 24, 28 and 35 all replaced older designs which were f2.8 and f2 as well.

The EE 24 f1.4, the upcoming EF 35 F1.4, the EF 24-70 f2.8 all point towards no IS for the cutting edge lenses. Who knows, maybe the 5D MkIV will have in-body IS...

Well, those are L lenses in a whole other price bracket. I dont expect an update for the 50mm f1.2, but the much cheaper 50mm f1.4.
