Hey guys,

I'm on the fence between the Elinchrom ELB 400 vs Profoto B1. Everyday (literally) I check the net for flash news to see if there's any upcoming models that are somewhat in the same category as these two. I've been doing this for half a year. I like everything about the B1 except that it can't be plugged into the wall and its astronomical price! Was just wondering if there's any news or potential sales from Profoto during Black Friday/Christmas (skeptical but doesn't hurt to ask).

I wouldn't hold your breath, they're a bit like Apple in the sense you're paying extra simply for the brand so a sale isn't something they'd encourage.

Only a few months ago they increased all their prices...

Profoto brand is tested and proven. Most big camera equipment rental companies all over the world carry them . Try it out and you'll see why it's priced like that. You get what you pay for.

Try their student discounts.

They can make good equipment and still be poor value, have you never asked yourself why the addition of a Profoto label doubles the retail cost of some modifiers?

Profoto modifiers may be expensive but they are a good value, they are high quality, durable and I think they have the best mounting system available.

There are deals to be had but you have to know what any given Profoto product cost retail in order to identify some of the deals. Sometimes there will be a sale without anyone saying there is a sale, things suddenly have a lower regular price and if you don't know the regular price it may pass you by.

I've found good deals but they are few and far between, usually if you find a deal you'll want to pull the trigger immediately. Some deals only last a few hours.

Profoto modifiers are built better than the other brands. It also holds their resale value..... reason why I went Profoto.

Where'd you find these sales? Individual retailers like B&H or somewhere else?

Yes, B&H, Adorama, etc. They both have sales every week, but I think they have better sales at certain times of the year like X-Mass, and during Photokina and the other photo expo where they announce all the new models.

Over the years I've put together a Profoto 5 light set-up on a budget, it takes a lot of patience and luck. The biggest problem is that when you have the money, you can't find a deal. Or, when you find a deal you don't have the money.
