I've been using the RRS B5D3A camera plate with my 5D3 for years. It's useful for arca-Swiss heads, but I mainly use it so I can use the canon handstrap. Recently I picked up a 5DS and I see RRS has released a new plate for it. Other body plate companies say their 5D3 and 5DS body plates are the same so I tried it out. The RRS B5D3A does fit BOTH the 5D3 and the 5DS.

If anyone else out there has both bodies and the body plate, can you give it a try an confirm? Just wanna know I'm not crazy:D

i have both cameras/plates, and besides the various functional design changes, the patterns of indentations on the contact surface of the plate are indeed different. does it fit?--probably, but i don't want to leave the thing on for years and then one day remove it only to discover it made permanent markings on the camera. but if it fits, i think it's likely that there's no serious problem.

also, pay attention to the port side of the camera--the shapes are different between the 2 cameras so make sure the plate is not pushing in on anything there. if anything doesn't fit, it would be around that area.

I've attached the plate to both bodies, loosened it enough to slide a piece of tracing paper around (yes, very scientific, I knowߘ), and haven't felt any hotspots/notches. But like you said, I don't know if I want to use it for the next couple years only to find out it's been rubbing a spot wrong the whole time.

btw, just in case you are thinking about getting the new plate, just wanna say that i like the 5d3's plate far more, that is rrs' old style. it seems they're going with a new style for all their new plates since my 7d2 and 5ds plates are similar: 2 pieces with a holder for the allen wrench built in. it's all super duper bulky. i hate it. also, the 5ds appears to have a cool secondary attachment to one of the strap bosses and would superficially look like it helps hold on to the camera a lot, but if you look closely it actually doesn't clamp to anything--appears like a totally useless thing added to fool people. so, many more pieces, far bulkier. guess they needed stuff to justify a higher price point (as if they needed a higher price point than already most-expensive-in-the-world), and to look blingier.

oh.... i do like your paper idea! didn't think of that! ;-)a

I have a Markins "dedicated 5D3" plate fitting comfortably on my 7D2!

Finally Canon is making more than one body at a time with similar "lines"

So Markins 5D3 plate will fit 4 different bodies! (5D3, 7D2, and both 5Ds)

These are just plates, NOT L Brackets. I've not tried to interchange those .. yet.

So the RRS B5D3-L A (for use without a grip) fits the 7D2 as well with one major problem. the battery door on the 7D2 will not open freely, not enough to replace the battery. :(

we are talking about 1/16th of an inch here. Anyone with a file or a belt sander could make it work, but who'd hack an RRS? :) ;) :p

Also, sadly there is enough of a difference in the 7D2 and 5D3 that my other plate currently installed on the 5D3 made by Sunway foto does not fit the 7D2.
the difference between it and the Markins 5D3 plate is the front lip. On the Markins the front lip is far lower. And the front is where the bodies differ. The 7D2 is slightly curved left to right, where as the 5D3 remains a virtual straight edge.

So not all 5D3 plates will fit 7D2.

Just FYI, the Markins 5D3 plate is by far the lowest profile plate one can buy for the 5D3/7D2 and I assume 5Ds. And it's Arca rail is square, so you can clamp front to back or side to side. I like them much better than my RRS plates now. Especially for the 90% of the time I am shooting hand held.

Thanks for the info! Didn't even consider Markins! And upon going to their site, the 5D3 & 5DS use the same plate - the P53U
