Hello.

I have a 7Dii and normally shoot in raw.
Sometimes however, I don't always feel like processing a lot of files and would like to shoot JPEG. Typical examples would be a family event or day out.

Firstly, any setting suggestions to get the best from the compressed format, AWB, sharpness, lens aberration correction, auto lighting optimiser strength.......etc.

Secondly, is it possible to have the camera save JPEG to the SD card and raw to the CF? If so, does the camera apply the settings to the raw files as well as the pegs?

My thanks in advance.

Instead of AWB you can try Custom WB. I find outdoors AWB is pretty good.

Try Sharpness at about 3 but you should test for yourself.

Either you have the less aberration connections on or off. Your choice. I believe one of them slows the camera when shooting fast FPS but you won't be doing that when you shooting a family outing. If you are shooting Jpeg I can see them being helpful. I never shoot Jpeg.

I don't use lighting optimizer so maybe someone else can help you with that.

There are a lot of etceteras :-) Testing goes a long way here.

You can't put Raw on one card and Jpeg on the other.

Oh yes you can. The settings used for the two files will be the same as if you saved only one of the formats.

You can put either Raw or Jpeg on either card

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

You can record Raw and Jpeg to different cards but what software do you use to process? I have several presets cooked up in lightroom that simulate a bunch of in-camera Jpeg settings. I can create the Jpeg style I want in a click and retain control over white balance without dealing with multiple files.

I haven't shot Jpeg since my 20D. I was going to say I wasn't sure but did a quick check in the manual and didn't find the info on that. I didn't look very hard. You learn something everyday.

You can indeed send raw to one card and JPG to the other. If you use DPP to process your raw, it will honor all in-camera settings that you set up, and had been applied to the JPG output. Other raw converters will either apply their own defaults, or do nothing, and won't honor the in-camera settings, I believe.

Set High ISO NR to either standard or strong, if you use strong, it will reduce a bit too much detail at high ISOs.

Try out different picture styles, and once you find one you like, save it as a custom setting in slots 1, 2 or 3. I use Landscape as my basis, and will then run sharpness and saturation as I like them.

That all being said, every raw file has a full sized embedded JPG in it. You could still only shoot raw, then use a number of free tools that are able to extract the JPG afterwards. This could help save you space, or give you peace of mind of having the raw recorded to both cards for backup. Just an FYI...

Didn't know that - can LR or PS get at this detail?

I don't think PS can? but I am not sure. Don't know about LR, I have LR3 sitting on my self and I don't use it.

Fastone is the one that keeps getting mentioned as a good file viewer/manipulator.

That JPG is one of the reasons for the sizes of raw files. High ISO images will incur very large raw files because the JPGs cannot be compressed as easily as smooth tonal images at low ISOs, and thus are larger than normal. There are other factors too, but this is one cause.

Older models had this too, but the JPG was a smaller resized sample. It was roughly around the time of the 7D that the raw contained the full sized JPG, I believe.

Irfanview (free) has no problem displaying Canon RAW files, and must do so by accessing the embedded JPG.

You might explore Canon's Picture Styles, for more effective use of JPEG. For example, you can truly change how the dynamic range of the scene is rendered to JPEG. Picture Styles like CineLook and CineTech compress the bottom end of the tonal range so that the histogram always has headroom at the bottom. This effectively brighten scenes automatically, but generally renders cleanly. This mapping is very useful for low light interiors, as one example. There are many Picture Styles available, you do not have to only use the default ones which come pre-installed on the 7D2. Additionally, Picture Styles are configurable, right in the camera.

This is just one exemplary Picture Style available:

You can actually use Canon's tool to create your own custom picture styles and upload them to the camera as well, or at least use them in DPP.
