I was out shooting the Pleiades last night and decided to try and grab some data on Orion before I went home. I was very pleasantly surprised to get this from only 6 subs as the clouds rolled in as per usual!

Nice image. The Star Adventurer is a great bit of kit isn't it?

John, beautiful photograph. As a beginner I could use some help. If your using the Skywatcher Star Adventurer, would you have gotten the same results if you shot one long exposure and used the tracking mechanism.
Thanks, Tim

Who's mom kidding, I don't see any electricity in there.

Thank you. For now I have only managed a maximum of two minute single exposures without star trailing at 200mm, if I can get to three minute exposures I'll be delighted, that will be down to exact polar alignment and perfect balancing. To get ten minute exposures you are getting into serious money for a good German equatorial mount!

John, thanks for the reply. I looked at your "Heart and Soul Nebulae", another great picture by the way, and saw that you used the Skywatcher Tracker and a total of 71 shots, Is it save for me to assume that even using the Tracker you will still need to take a series of "short" shots and stack them as opposed to one "long" single exposure.
Thanks, Tim

On the heart and soul shot it was only really 26 x 90 second shots. The others were calibration frames. Stacking shots improves the signal to noise ratio so you end up with a less noisy image, corrects vignetting etc. Before I really got into this I bought a book called Making every photon count, I highly recommend it, it explains in laymans terms everything you need to know, there are also some great forums out there like stargazerslounge and cloudy nights that have a wealth of knowledge on them as does here, but the are specialized to astro stuff :) If I can help any further just shout :)

John, couldn't find that book locally (USA), but did buy these 2 books.

Wow. Nice work. This gives me some incentive to head out again. My North American Nebula sucked.

EDIT: Never mind. You have a modified camera. No way I could duplicate this.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!
