I was wondering if there are any ways of attaching arca swiss plates to black rapid fasteners without a quick release plate nor buying an expensive hunk of metal like the $150 (you've got to be kidding me) Arcatech Swiftclamp (external link) or $65 Fusion Plate (external link). There's a cheap 3rd party arca swiss plate on eBay (external link) which has a screw handle that you can probably hook onto the camera strap, but i'm a little concerned whether or not the fastening screw handle is load bearing and will snap trying support the weight of the camera. Has anyone else tried doing something similar or is this an all-around bad idea and I should look into another solution?

I do love my Fusion plate, and it has worked very well for me.

I have a cheap clamp on my Metro sling that clamps to my ArcaSwiss base plate on my Fuji X-T1 or X-E2. Both cameras also have the Peak Design attachments on the sides and I use a Peak Design Cuff to additionally "tether" the camera to the sling (above the clamp), so if the clamp fails due to me being negligent, the cuff will catch it. Plus I can quickly switch to just the wrist cuff or a Peak Design strap.

Here's how the strap looks like:

The clamp is a cheap one, don't recall where I got it, but it was less than $25.

My RRS plates have 1/4-20 screw holes made into them, so I just screw the blackrapid fastener directly into the plate. Nothing else needed.

Ok thanks for the replies, I'll look into this further.

Right, I forgot to mention: I use RRS base plates as well. Just find it more elegant to use the ArcaSwiss clamp to connect the strap. I used blue Loctite on the screw that attaches the sling to the clamp. Maybe I'm a bit over the top with drop protection but I'd hate if my camera dropped to the floor because I didn't tighten a screw properly or missed to check it during a long day running around with the camera.

I use pro or gripped bodies and sometimes when shooting on the ground I like to hold the vertical grip with the camera still horizontal as a way to get closer to the ground. The standard BR mount fits into my palm without issue but there is no way one of those Arca style clamps would so as neat as that setup looks, its a non starter for me.

I just recently discovered the Fusion plate and promptly bought one for each of my bodies. Admittedly, I haven't used them in the field yet but I can't see anything to complain about. I am especially happy now that the Fusion mount on the body won't create a "hotspot" against my laptop when its in the camera bag now like the BR one did. My bodies also stand up in my safe again.

I ended up getting an L-bracket and attaching it to my black rapid strap using a Uni-Loop connector (external link).

Spent a full day shooting with the Fusion plate carrying a 1DX and 100-400II and it was fantastic.

I use a Kirk QRC-1 clamp which is not crazy expensive and perfect for the job. Biggest advantage of using the small clamp is that one strap can quickly and easily be used between all my cameras/lenses as I have arca swiss clamps on all of them. Other is that the camera can quickly be removed from the strap, mounted on a tripod and then straight back on the strap once done.

I didn't want to use any of the cheap clamps off ebay etc as the value of the equipment hanging from it is sufficiently high not to want to save a few ££ on fixing it to the strap.

I was initially worried about it coming unclamped when I was walking around but if anything it can be quite difficult to undo at times. It has never come even close to being loose.

Very lucky to have a lot of nice toys :)
