Sigma super 500 flash not working???

I have a Canon 50D and a Sigma EF-500 Super flash. The flash has always worked good but today I was trying to use it in manual mode on camera and it would not flash. It would work if I set it to TTL but not in manual. Any ideas of what I have messed up? Did I mess up a setting??? Help please.

I know with my Sigma 500 back when the 50D came out I had to send it off to get a firmware update.
