Hi Guys.
Just read the fixes given by firmware update for 7D2. v105.

Below is a copy of para 3.

3. Fixes a phenomenon, in which, while performing an EF lens firmware update, the progress bar displayed on the LCD monitor may freeze at 100% even though the update has been completed.

Now this is probably the dumbest question of the week (possibly year).

But is the firmware in the latest lenses updatable via the memory card - or have I
got the wrong end of the stick?

Thanks for any comment.

You are correct. A few of the most recent lenses do support firmware upgrades through the camera they are mounted on. The camera must also be recent enough, of course.
When both parts are supporting this, you install the lens' firmware on the memory card, just like you otherwise do with the camera's firmware, and update using the camera's menu item for lens firmware update.

Right now, based on Canon's list at http://www.usa.canon.com …upport-_-Firmware+Updates (external link) only the EF40mm f/2.8 STM, EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF500mm f/4L IS II USM, and EF600mm f/4L IS II M are able to have their firmware be upgraded. If you go to the link, and click on the specific lens, you will see what the upgrade remedies and what cameras can be used to accomplish the upgrade. For example, the 40 mm f/2.8 STM can only be upgraded when connected to a Canon EOS-1D X, Canon EOS 5D Mark III or Canon EOS REBEL T4i (there are some limitations). See http://usa.canon.com …il&docId=0901e0248060f7c7 (external link) for the 40mm f/2.8 STM firmware details.

Once upgraded some benefits of the upgrade apply to use on any compatible camera.

I don't know why, but my 1DX doesn't seem to be aware that I must send my EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS II USM to a Canon Service center to have the firmware upgraded. Now it's not needed, since the 1DX does indeed display the firmware version in the lens as 1.1.1, but it also says it's OK to update the lens, if I do have a firmware file for it. Yet Canon claims they have to do it.

Thanks for the replies lads - confirms my thoughts. But Cannon has not seemed to have publicised the ability to update the firmware on some lenses. Maybe I missed it.
Do you know if the 100-400 Mk2 L is able to be updated? Would be nice to know - even if I can find no problem with it.

I'll repeat what I said earlier, that all Canon firmware updates are listed at http://www.usa.canon.com …upport-_-Firmware+Updates (external link) and the list appears to be relatively up to date since some entries are there from last month. Scroll down and you will not see the 100-400mm MKII listed which to me means a firmware update is not available or the lens lacks that capability.

The 100-400 MK II reports it's firmware version to the 7D2 so it's likely that its updatable. So does the 24-70 F4.

There might be some omissions on the above "list" because there hasn't been a firmware upgrade since their release.

1DXmkII / 7DmkII / 100-400mkII / 70-200mkII / 24-70mkI / 24-70F4L / 16-35mkI / 50ART / 40STM / 50STM / 1.4xIII

Thanks again Lads

I realise there was no update listed for the 100-400 MK II L - but I couldn't find a spec saying it was updatable. Perhaps it is? I can find no fault with the lens but it is nice to know though.
Thanks again.

The 40mm doesn't list "firmware updatable" as a spec on its product page either, so I don't think thats any indication.

That "list" of firmware updates a few threads up is hardly indicative either since it only lists downloadable firmware updates. If there isn't a newer firmware than what shipped for a particular product, it isn't listed.

For example, if the 40STM is updatable, one would expect the 24STM and 50STM to be as well (and they aren't on the above list). All of those lens report their firmware version to camera. My older 24-70, 16-35 and 70-200 MK II DO NOT report their firmware to the same camera so one would expect those weren't updatable.

Again, the 100-400II reports it firmware version to camera but being updatable is useless if Canon never releases an update.

1DXmkII / 7DmkII / 100-400mkII / 70-200mkII / 24-70mkI / 24-70F4L / 16-35mkI / 50ART / 40STM / 50STM / 1.4xIII
