Need ID Please , Unknown Insect

I took this out where I work in W.Texas this morning . At first I thought it was a huge Horsefly but after further examination I don't think it is but I have never seen this insect before . It was upright and I laid a quarter by it , started taking pictures then the insect just turned over and died . So strange . Sorry these are not the best of pictures cause the only thing I had was my phone camera which is not real good on pictures . Can anyone identify this insect ?

The beak partly visible in your first photo suggests Mexican Cactus Fly (external link).

Thanks for both your inputs . It looks like it could be either one both of you mentioned . It was at least 1" long . Never saw a fly that big but like I said it looked like a giant horsefly .

Agreed. The difference between the two (that I could see) was wing color. The cactus fly wings look clear but the rabbit bot fly wings look dark brown...

There is a Flickr insect ID group, post the image there and maybe someone will know what kind of fly it is.
