I'm using two 580EXII's and the ST-E2 transmitter. I purchased all of the items used.

When I got the transmitter, I went a solid year before I had to change the battery. I did that and, about two months ago, I changed it again after about a year (with a Radio Shack version). I came to the conclusion that those batteries last a while.

Well, in the middle of a shoot yesterday, the transmitter died. It was the battery and, because I'd allowed myself to believe that they last a long time, I didn't have a spare with me. Needless to say, the shoot came to a screeching halt. I made a few phone calls and found one and, thankfully, the client was sympathetic and more than accommodating. In return, I'm comping them two hours of shoot time; one hour for the time it took me to get the new battery and one hour for the inconvenience of it all.

Anyway, that's not really what this is about.

I use Eneloop rechargeable in my flashes, and was considering using a rechargeable for my transmitter. I just wanted to solicit input on what are some solid choices.

Thanks!

Im not sure how the transmitter would behave, as the voltage would be different.

A normal lithium cell is 3v - the 2CR5 has 2 together for 6v

A normal lithium ion rechargeable cell is 3.7v flat and 4.2ish fresh off the charger, so your ST-E2 would see between 7.4v and 8.2v which may fry something inside - assuming you can find a rechargeable 2CR5

When i used the STE2 - i would keep a spare in my camera bag - as soon as it went into the ST-E2 i would aquire another one (as soon as i got back to the office, we had a few in the battery cupboard)
Same with the CR2450 that the PW TT1 used (although i kept 2-3 spare CR2450, because they were so small, and would go flat overnight if the TT1 was left switched on)

In theory, though. wouldn't a rechargeable 2CR5 be configured to provide 6V?

Lenmar makes one;

However, some of the reviews look terrible! Seems to be hot or miss.

This one appears to have better reviews, but fewer;

Also, A 2CR5 is literally 2 qty cr5 cells.

You can get rechargeable CR5;

You would think - but not if its normal lithium ion chemistry.
There is a 3ish volt rechargeable lithium cell, but the capacity is pretty low, you would need to keep spares around

Ah, and here I am with my deep well of knowledge regarding normal lithium ion chemistry...

;-)a

I ordered five non-rechargeables last night. I'm not going to let myself be without at least one spare. I don't want a repeat of yesterday's shoot anytime soon...
