Focus stacking in PS 2015

I shoot tethered using Canon Utility Software which allows all settings computer controlled.
Sync all CR2 files in LR then off to PS for the "auto align" function...then parallax rears it's ugly head,
especially with large DOF differences.
The edges of the image are unusable...doing it in stages doesn't improve things much.
Painting parts back in seems to be the only thing that helps.

Is there something that I'm missing...especially with flower images that lack crisp edges for PS to grasp onto.

I've not used PS for stacking so can't comment whether you are doing something wrong but I assume you are using the normal process. I can only suggest you try a trial of zerene and use Pmax to stack. It's pretty good with blurry edges (although not perfect) but also it's easy to edit the stack after using the built in edit function to copy from single frames onto the stack.

Brian beat me too it. The combination of PMax and the retouching tool in Zerene make this far easier than it would be otherwise.

FWIW, one thing that I'm finding successful is moving the FOV ever so slightly while taking a small number of stacks...
then combining the whole series as I normally would process them. It seems to cut down on artifacts and parallax
edge problems, especially if you're into photomerging the finished product.
