Have you ever noticed that a focal length covered by one or more of your lenses gets little or no use? Have you found an explanation?

For me, it seems that 50mm is the least used. I used to have a prime which was sold and my 24-105 f/4 L seems really allergic to 50mm :-)
I find myself always looking for the wider 35mm to increase the environmental impact or for a longer 70/85mm to compress the perspective and reduce dof.

Anything in the 0-49mm range takes some convincing for me to use. I guess it's just more challenging because you have to more carefully pay attention to catching extra stuff in the frame.

I never seem to use the 55-70mm range anymore... ;-)a

But seriously, every one of my zooms has a range that gets the least use..... I suppose 30-45mm is used least in my standard zoom

I rarely take the 10-18 stm out so those focal legths qualify too....

This year I used 50mm more than ever...

I'm covered from 24-200mm plus an extender (x1.4) with 4 lenses, 2 primes and 2 zooms, standard for weddings. I miss a wide angle below 24mm for landscapes of skylines...one day I will get it.

In my 30+ years of more serious shooting, I have had a 50mm f1.8 lens only once, just in the last 2 years and hardly ever used it. I gave it away here :)

All my lenses get pretty even use. If I run a plot of used focal lengths I get spikes where I have prime lenses and at the extreme ends of zooms. I would say the least used 'area' would be the 150-199mm. Once I get to 150, I pretty much just zoom the rest of the way in. Before I got my 70-200/4 IS and was using a 55-250, the dead band was 150-249.

Trivia: In the '70s I switched form large format to 35mm, & carried the 20, 35, 50, 105, & 200mm Nikkors. I found that most of the time I reached for the 20 or 105. The least used lens was the 35mm.

<24mm. I have a 16-35, but if I were to sell a lens, I could live without the range wider than 24mm most easily. A lot of times when I do shoot below 24mm, I wind up cropping the shot anyway.

I use 17, 24, 28 and 35 for travel and 50 and 85 for models. The 30 gets used inside. So it all depends on what I'm doing.

12mm. But that doesn't say I never use it. I may never use 12mm for 9 months and then take hundreds of wide landscape shots like I did last weekend and this weekend up in the Catskills.

I'd say that I use my 100mm F/2.8 Macro the least. It's a great lens, but I rarely shoot 'macro' shots, and I prefer my 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 or even 300mm f/4 L IS for portraits. It focuses too slowly!

Hrm. Well, anything I don't have obviously... so that's probably not a reasonable answer.

But of the focal lengths I have, I use 50mm the least. Followed by 28mm.

Very best,

From 35 to 85 (on full frame). I just don't go there often. The landscape and scenic stuff is often wider and the portrait stuff is usually 85 or more. There are exceptions but more often or not 50mm bores me.

This is sort of a bassackwards answer but...

I really thought my answer would be 50mm. I honestly believed that I hardly ever used that FL. My LR catalog tells me otherwise. Fully 7% of my catalog was shot at, or really close to 50mm. Seems I've fallen into the internet desert of "50mm is boring" while actively using that focal length.

I am a wide kind of guy (build and photography :) ), but I have a big hole in my catalog from 20 to 28mm. Lots from 10 to 20 (crop & ff), a big hole, then pretty much evenly spread up to 200. I didn't count anything longer than that because I only use the long end of the 100-400 for kids' games, and don't do much of that.
