My daughter is asking about the 6D. I know it's full frame. What else does it excel at or is known for?

It focuses in insanely low light with the center point. But the full frame sensor is the key selling point.

The low light performance is awesome.

Some key points I like:
ISO performance
Low light center point performance
Built in GPS

Some points I don't like:
1/4000 max shutter speed
1/180 max sync speed.

I think the real value is how good the image quality is, considering how reasonably priced they are. Make no mistake, it is not a sport body. But for pretty much anything else. It's awesome.

I think it might get you more information if you turned the question around: what does she want it for? What are her primary types of shooting?

The image quality is its best point. It has very little line (banding) noise or any kind of chunky noise. It is close second only to the much more expensive 1Dx in high-ISO noise, and is a little better than the 5D3 and the 5Ds at high-ISO noise.

It is compromised compared to other current full-frame cameras as far as AF is concerned, if you use any AF point other than the center one. The center AF point, however, is one of the most sensitive that Canon makes, in low light.

The time between when you press the shutter and when the exposure happens is a little longer than most of the full-frame Canons.

If you're shooting very active subjects, like sports or wildlife, then other cameras may keep up better, but if you're shooting things that don't move around much, the 6D will be an excellent choice (unless you really want to spend the extra money for 50MP with a 5Ds).

I've had my 6D for about 2 years now. It is quite good at everything, with the notable exception of a crippled AF system. The center point is excellent at tracking action, if you can keep it on your intended target. I can't, so I bought a 70D for action. Turns out the 70D, with its DPAF and full-time auto-focus in LV and video is much better at LV and video, too. Better is probably the wrong word. More useful describes it more accurately. If your daughter is into video - the 70D and STM lenses are killer for video. I use the 18-55 & 24-105 STMs, and just ordered a 10-18 STM for the in-the-house-stuff.

Where does it excel? It's not the camera that needs to excel my friend, it's the ability to be able to use it and LR is where you need to excel

It excels at being the least expensive full frame from Canon with the highest ISO performance and low light autofocus from center point for $1k (refurb) or less. Again, from Canon.

Basically if you just want a full frame sensor, with superb high ISO performance, decent dynamic range, good center point autofocus (-3 EV in darkness), and great resolution & image quality, but at an affordable price point, giving up a lot of other features, the 6D is it.

Very best,

Oh, come now.

Some cameras are better at some things than others. Would you grab 5Dc+15mm Fisheye to do a football game, or a 7DII+70-200 II? Shooting video? How about the choice between a 500D+18-55 IS and 70D+18-135STM. Gear matters. Try hammering a 10-penny nail through a 4x4 with a butter knife. Gear always matters. Sometimes more than others, but it always matters.

It's a low light beast. Although I disagreee on the AF in low light, the times I borrowed my friend's 6D I wasn't impressed with the AF. He let me shoot a concert once and it struggled with decent primes(i just used the center point).

But the high ISO was phenomenal, being able to get a usable 25,600 blew my mind. I'm only getting 12,800 from my A7 and a pathetic 6,400 on my 7D Mark II.

Speaking only from my experience with the 6D with various lenses, it is not recommended for moving subjects in low light. Been there. Tried that. No thanks.

Image quality, forth best out of all canon cameras.

Feasible AF, there wasn't anything that I couldn't capturing, although it takes more work than other cameras.

Extremely high value.

My favorite subjects are music festivals, nature photography (mushrooms in dark woods) and street. Light body and high ISO image quality suit me perfectly. Many consider it as a good backup to 5D III, it's the other way around for me. For those looking for excellent IQ in a FF Canon there is no better entry-level body, once the limitations are understood.

Wonderful. Center point AF is extremely sensitive. I love shooting this camera at night.
