As a guest I shot this at -2/3rds SOOC jpeg. Some years ago now from a 1DS. Imagine what it would have been like with no flash? Horrendous shadows.

It would still have had the cluttered background, unflattering angle, the two women with their eyes shut (or just about shut) on top of the slightly worse shadows that the ones in the image even with flash. "Looking at that shot you could have used the light that was already there much better." Steve

There are some situations where off-camera lighting will ruin the awesomeness of the scene in front you, while other images you can only pull off with flash. First step is to always look at the available light and then make a decision based on the light and environment before you. 5DMK IV | 60D | 40D | Tamron 70-200 G2 | Sigma 35 f/1.4 | Tamron 17-50 | 50 f/1.4 | 85 f/1.8 | 55-250

She actually is beautiful as are her friends. The guy is MY SON, an accomplished musician and a molecular scientist an one hell of a nice guy. No flashes. The setting sun was reflected from the windows of the building from the left (the big group) and from behind me (the smaller group) You see how pretty the Finnish girls are? Like, yeah!

Zansho "I'd kill for a hot pink 40D" More info | I put in my post that that particular example were my flashed strobe. In that case, it would be a single Einstein with an octobox providing the light. http://www.michaeljsamaripa.com

My style(vision) is to use the available light as efficiently as possible. I *rarely use flash of any kind. It's also rare that I prefer photos with flash, including some of those in this thread. It comes down completely to my style and preference. garbidz wrote in post #17835004 Getting pictures here is not like Facebook easy or Tumbler elegant... It's not difficult either...
