F1 USGP at COTA, October 25, 2015

The weekend was far from perfect...heavy rains Friday & Saturday canceled practice & qualifying sessions for all...Usually I spend those times to get in the groove & get my AF settings on point...Without those times, I ended up shooting the race only which led to less than 300 total images & even less rock solid keepers...looking back now, i could have lowered the shutter speed/iso a bit, but with the short time i had to shoot, it was literally run & gun...disappointing for sure

nice set, did you have a credential?

No sir i did not...the 2 publications that got me into Le Mans last month couldn't get em for f1 because they weren't print publications

Main reason why i was shooting at 400/800mm the entire time

Gotta love the turbulent air in that Williams shot!

liked your flicker shots too. I believe F1 is one of the hardest series to get a credential for.

So ive heard...i was a week too late getting my foot in the door with a solid publication, had i contacted them earlier, they could have got me fully credentialed...always next season

Ill be shooting NASCAR next weekend in Dallas...im excited...never been to nor photographed the good ol American racing before

Those are really high ISO levels. Did you process those in photoshop ?

ETA: Ah nevermind. I see one of the EXIF reports shows it a 400mm 2.8.

I shot the inaugural texas race for the Dallas Morning News great track. I shoot indy and Daytona now, but Indy cars are
the most exciting. I always wanted to do the indy cars at Texas. if you are interested hears a link to some of my shots

Images were shot with a 400 2.8 with & without a 2xIII

man, the ISO thing...i had such limited time to shoot & i didnt want to waste anytime having to change settings much...so i threw it in shutter priority with auto ISO...that allowed me to just play with the shutter speed while moving around the track...i literally made a hot lap from the mega stage, down around 11, up to 9, then made my way across the bridges to finally turn 19...2-3 laps at each location & off to the next...i didnt notice until today that most of these were at 3200+...i could have easily slowed the shutter down a bit to get that ISO down, but again, with the limited time, I just wanted to make sure i was able to go home with some solid shots...plus, it was a dark overcast from the weather we had over the weekend...SOOC looked pretty good, but a quick bump in LR made em pop

images were processed in LRcc with 0 noise reduction...probably spent a total of 1min on each one & copy/pasted settings on similar shots

nice...i went to the 2012 usgp at cota, at the time i was a full time, 10yr auto mechanic...i borrowed a fuji dslr "type" camera & played around with it...i enjoyed it so much, i ended up ordering my 1st camera (canon t4i) the next week...quickly moved up to the 7D...a year after that race, i put down the wrenches for good & transitioned into photographer...7d to 5d3, now to 7d2

ill be shooting the NASCAR AAA 500 next weekeend at TMS...never been too a nascar race, so im pretty excited...its gonna be a rush being trackside at the 1st one

That 7Dm2 works well then, of course that big 2.8 400 helps. Theres no way I would have gotten images that clear with my 100-400 and 7D. Would have been noisy.


Great shots though, I'm just surprised they turned out that well with such a high ISO.

nice link, I never had the balls to give up my day job for photography so good for you. photography has allowed me to meet most of my sports heroes and a lot of great people. Enjoy the ride and check out an indy car race.

Saw the race on TV, it was a good one ! Lots of action all through the field, and Hamilton clinched the drivers championship.
