Canon Profits down - Does anyone have anymore info on this news report?

Just finished reading this article and now I'm curious as to what others might know about this.

I'd say without actual facts or statistics from a reputable source that shows people are moving away from Canon to other manufacturers for mirrorless cameras, and thats why their sales are down, its pure speculation. Even if that is the reason, not too surprising. Mirrorless is a hot new trend and Canon hasn't updated their full frame line for almost 4 years. It will all shake out soon enough once the new models are released early next year.

Canon DSLR sales have been dropping for the last few years. Nothing is really surprising...trend will continue.

In July, Canon Inc cut its earnings outlook for the full year and reported a 16 percent fall in quarterly profit, for what they attributed as consumers, increasingly in the habit of taking photos with their smartphones, bought fewer compact digital cameras.

Things will always change. DSLRs may not be around forever. Not so long ago there was talk that film may go away and there were doubters. There may be mirrorless cameras soon that will be just as good as (or better than) today's DSLRs and the pros will migrate to them.

Photography is not dependent on a specific tool, the tool that gets the job done the best will win.

While is hard to specifically say to Canon lost is Sony gain, this report shows Sony's imaging division increasing +3.5% in sales revenue and 22.2% in operating income, FY2015. Sony's been the new kid on the block and has been kicking butt as of late. Canon's got some work to do.

Unfortunately pros alone cannot keep a division the size of Canon's camera division healthy. Canon needs consumers and so do pros and enthusiasts alike. If SLRs fall to become a niche market R/D dollars will flow elsewhere and SLR will stagnate or Canon might decide to sell of the business.

True, but Canon will get serious about mirrorless next year. Once they release a FF mirrorless with more than a laughable 4-5 FPS the competition has, and improving on it in every aspect, it will be game over. Canon is like Apple these days. They used to be more innovative and first to market (like with the first 35mm DSLR) but not so much these days as there are more players in the game now. They are on top and are rarely if ever first to the party because they don't have to be. They let the other companies rush to be first to market making a ton of mistakes along the way (see Sony's first A7x cameras that needed replacements within 12-18 months because they were so awful) then they come along and show everyone how its done. Im willing to bet a vast majority of previous Canon users who switched brands to get mirrorless will come running back when Canon starts to put theirs out. The same way the vast majority of iPhone users who switched to get larger display phones came running back to Apple once they finally started making larger displays.

Well, the same currency issues would also apply to Canon. So would their loses be ever more? At worst, Sony's sales are flat and they probably have gain market share over the past year.

My purpose in stating the Sony results were to illustrate simply that Sony's UNIT VOLUME was down, due to market contraction. It was not a comparative assessment vs. Canon.

As for relative growth, in Canon's own quarterly statement, it proclaimed

"Within the Imaging System Business Unit, although total sales volume of interchangeable-lens digital cameras
declined due to market shrinkage, unit sales of interchangeable-lens digital cameras increased from the same
period of the previous year in Japan thanks to healthy demand for such new models as the EOS 5DS, EOS
5DS R and EOS M3. As for digital compact cameras, although sales volume declined amid the ongoing
contraction of the market due to the effects of the growing popularity of smartphones, profitability improved
thanks to the growing ratio of high-added-value models featuring high image quality and high-magnification
zoom capabilities, along with a smooth transition from old products to new products."

My main point is this:
Reuters reports that a shifting digital camera landscape are to blame for Canon’s weakening business. Smartphones are causing consumer demand for compact cameras to shrivel up, while mirrorless cameras are eating away at Canon’s market share for DSLRs, which have higher profit margins.

I don't think anyone can deny the strong offerings by Sony of late. Hopefully this will compel Canon to do likewise - in sensor technology and mirrorless.
