I'm thinking about getting LR6. My "photography" computer is not connected to the internet(I don't want viruses, spyware, and other junk on it). Will I need to connect to the internet to activate LR6?

Yes. Same basics: install you'll run the install package and a connection to initiate-validate the license.

Looks like an internet connection is required to keep it running. Maybe I'll get LR5 on Ebay.

You only have to connect it once a month, if you use the monthly plan. The time period between connections is even longer if you take the pay upfront option. I would not think it would be a huge risk to connect your computer to the net occasionally to confirm your product registration. I would think the risks would be very very low on having something bad happen to your computer in the time it takes for LR to phone home.

Alan

PS You need to go online to validate both LR4 and LR5 as well.

Yes, provided the computer is behind some kind of firewall (any basic home router will do) there's virtually ZERO risk to having a computer connected to the Internet. 99.9% of problems are the result of the user's use of the Internet.

Yep, don't use the browser or read email and you are very safe with this sort of set up.

Might even be closer to 99.999% :)

It's better to spend a few bucks creating a proper backup strategy and take precautions when browsing, opening email attachments, etc. than to be handcuffed by fear of a getting a virus. If I were really paranoid I'd probably set my firewall up to only allow certain websites (e.g. POTN, banking, Adobe, etc.) and block access to everything else.

Hmm - I don't think my LR 5.7 has ever contacted Adobe.

It has to connect at least once to validate your license key.

It's been a while since I installed it, but I'm pretty sure my copy has never phoned home. It is a legal copy, bought from Amazon, and running fine.

Edit: I checked the LR box. It says only "Internet connection required for Internet-based services".

It's not that it will "phone home" like the subscription, but when you buy it you have to install the validation key, at which time it will "phone home" to verify that it's legitimate.

Not so with my installation.

I have no actually knowledge but I would assume they have programmed the algorithm for validation directly into the install screen. No need to connect to validate.

I will comment that my Lightroom 6 absolutely refused to activate without the internet.
It is not the CC or any kind is subscription either.

This doesn't surprise me. If you didn't need an internet connection to validate and it was only built-in to the install screen, what would prevent millions of copies being activated using the same code?
