Some consider this bird the most beautiful in the tropics, the Mayans worsipped it and in Guatemala the currency, quetzal, is named after him.

All 3 shots are beautiful. What a cool bird this is. If i had to chose, the second shot ( female) is stunning. Detail ( feathers on back to tail) . crispness, pose, eye all come together very nicely.

Thanks Paul, they are beautiful and unfortunately getting rare. They live in the mountains, migrate vertically as food becomes available. Unfortunately much of their habitat is going fast.

Thanks Gary, the light was very bad, it was early morning in the forest. I shot these at 1/40 to 1/60 sec, f5.6. I wonder if they would have come as well with the 100-400. I think the 400 5.6 does better wide open then the 100-400. By the way I got over 100 chigger bites walking through pasture to get to the woods, I'm still itching.

Well done Paul.

That really is its name. Found in the highlands of Central America, this one was on the Serro de la Muerte, Costa Rica, 7,000 feet. It is beautiful, thanks Dimitri.
