Has anyone any experience of converting this lens to an EOS mount?
I've been offered one and wondered if it was worth buying to convert and use on my 6d..
I don't know how easy or successful these mount conversions are or if the image quality obtained is worth the effort involved..
Any input would be appreciated....

Thanks

It's kind of a loss leader. Not exactly worth it in my opinion. But I guess it depends on the overall costs involved.

You do know there is an EF mount 500mm f/4.5 wiht real Canon AF that sells for around $2.5K?

Or you can find a used SIGMA 500mm f/4.5 for even less on occasion.

Thanks for your input......Its just that I was offered a used one cheap and wondered if the conversion was worth doing....
The only problem with the EF 500 4.5 is that I was under the impression that canon no longer repair them due to lack of parts availability..
I have considered the Sigma and would be tempted if one came along at the right price but really I have my heart set on a 500 f4.....I will have to keep saving...
Thanks again..

I've bitten the bullet and purchased a 500 f4...collecting it at the weekend...will post some photos hopefully next week..
This will be the first prime I've ever bought, always gone for the versatility of zooms before..

EdMika's 0.75mm thin adapter requires no modification to the lens and allows infinity, or near infinity focus with most FD telephoto lenses.

He had some health issues recently so I don't think it will be easy to find one.

I converted a Canon 200MM F4 macro using Ed Mika's FD adapter. The adapter cost me $99 and it took me about 20 minutes to do the conversion. Things to keep in mind:
1) No AF confirmation, there are chips you can attach to the adapter but their usefulness seems to be questionable.
2) Stopped down metering/focusing, no big deal(if using LV), focusing will be a major issue at smaller apertures through the viewfinder.
3) My lens does show some fringing wide open, issue goes away at smaller apertures. I imagine AF lenses are optimized for AF bodies.
4) Ed Mika's adapter is made out a synthetic material, nothing wrong with it, it has worked just fine so far -- but there is this uneasy feeling that it's "plastic". There was a fellow on Ebay also selling those adapters in stainless steel, but his selection was not as big as Ed's.

I already had the lens so my total investment was just the cost of the adapter. I would not buy the lens and then modify it, it doesn't seem worth the expense and inconvenience, specially for a 500mm which would be used in far more dynamic environments than a macro lens.
