Please post your volleyball photos here using the Canon 85mm f1.8 lens. I recently started shooting volleyball shots with this lens and absolutely love it! Focus is fast and makes great images. I'm definitely not a professional but I love this lens for volleyball and basketball.

Heya,

Great lighting in that gym, wow. Being able to shoot at ISO 1600 in that light with that shutter is making it easy peasy for you.

It is a great lens for this sort of stuff.

Very best,

Very best,

I've noticed school lighting is getting much better! Many of them are upgrading lights to save energy and take advantage of the government incentive + a consumers energy incentive is going around to make it affordable.

Nice work. I used my 85mm f1.8 to shoot youth hockey & soccer before springing for a longer zoom.

Thanks you guys! The lighting in my daughter's high schools gym is pretty good. I think they did upgrade the lighting recently. My daughter's team has their first round playoff game tonight at a neutral site so we'll see how that goes.

Just wanted to mention that for basketball and volleyball this is probably the best lens to use. I don't use anything else. For football or soccer it is a bit too short though. Great for portraits also.

A couple from my daughters last game of the season. Just shooting from the stands casually but I had just received the 85 1.8 so wanted to try it out.

I like the content but if you have the 300 available, I'd say use it.
300 f/2.8 + FF is a really good combination for volleyball if you have the space (which most high school gyms do IME). Bring along an 85 for some net-side shooting and you've got a really nice combo.

Great Shots! I'm not sure if the girl in pic #2 is an optical illusion, but it looks like she has a crazy vertical!

Yes she does have a great vertical. She also cleans up the boards in basketball. She's gonna be a big factor on my daughter's basketball team. Also I only have the 85 but I like being on the floor courtside for my shots. I'm sure the 300 is great also.

nice shots! Volleyball to me is one of the hardest sports to photograph. The action is just so fast!

Nice photos.
I shoot a decent amount of volleyball.
It helps that I coach volleyball too, so I know where the ball is likely to go.
Our refs don't like side line shooting very much. They'll actuall move in the way sometimes to discourage it. Since the ball is in play where I would stand, it makes sense.

I shoot through the net and try to get as high as possible so the players faces aren't blocked.
I don't have any shots with an 85 so I won't post here but I do have 100 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 shots with my 7d.
