Would appreciate names of 3rd party repair services. Canon will no longer repair a 5D other than a mirror issue.

Shutter button on camera most of the time does not fire, remote cord still fires shutter.

Camera must be repaired because it is a IR conversion.

I don't think Canon even does the mirror repair any longer do they? Or perhaps now it just isn't free?

Thanks, Team.

No, they will not accept a 5D for anything, even cleaning, other than a mirror issue.

Appreciate your list.

I have already called local repair shops and found out the following. Sorry, should have been in the original post.

The repair on a 5D must be by a Canon authorized repair facility. Reason being is that when canon removes support for a model, they also eliminate parts sales. Authorized facilities must also carry a sizable parts inventory. So even small shops that do repairs in-house cannot do the work, because they cannot order parts.

One repair shop told me that canon used to have 50 in the U.S., almost one per state. However, they told me the camera repair business is in shreds compared to years ago, hence help is hard to find.

Again, thanks... still looking.

Is the shutter button sticking? Have you tried the alcohol bath?

I'd try precision camera or KEH. Two of the largest repair centers I know, and most likely to have a part stock.

If it's a sticky shutter button the alcohol method seems to work well. It's quite easy though you do have to be careful to and let things dry thoroughly before using the camera. Take a look at this video.

BTW, these days picking up another 5D might be less than a repair bill. There is one FS now.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Thanks, Q. I will look into KEH. They ran across my mind but I have not called.

JJ. It's a IR converted camera. So it would be the price of a used camera plus $275 for a Lifepixel conversion that must be beat.

Sorry, I missed that part. Might try the alcohol fix though. I have done this on two different cameras and both time it worked as easily as the video shows though I mounted the camera on a tripod to keep it at an angle so that the shutter button is clearly the lowest point and gave it a lot more time to evaporate. (several hours)
