Got invited to a small town barrel race during the summer of this year and finally decided to load a few up. It was a messy arena and had some harsh lighting, but I am quite happy with what I turned out. I will load a few more up as I get them processed.

Hehe Thanks Furlan...sadly they actually look better not on the web. I'll have to look into how to post the best settings again. Been a while since I've done any web posting.

As #2 shows the only angle that captures barrel racing at its peak is the rider coming out of the tightest part of the turn. Spend as much of your energy as you can finding and capturing that moment.

Yea I had read that. I was moving all over the place that day. Rounding second was the best but the two in this one were both at third. Thanks Gonzo...I will be working with barrels and rodeos a lot more next summer.

Good shots. I've been shooting rodeo not exclusively since summer. Barrels are my favorite and have given me my best shots since the action is predictable. If you stick with it, suggest shooting from as long angle as possible (its killer on the knees, but gives you better perspectives). Also fast focusing lens is a must!

If you can get inside the arena, even better, but be careful and ready to move. Nothing scarier than a huge horse coming at you and not knowing if the rider will steer it away from you.

Have fun!

Thanks Weasel, Yea I really want to get into it more, it's certainly a fun thing to shoot. I was never a fan of people riding horses, but the people I saw at this event actually cared about their horses. I will have to stick with my 85 1.8 for a while and get much better with that before I branch out to other lenses.

Hopefully if I start running the circuit around my state I'll get some venues that will let me inside the arena. I worked on a ranch for years with bulls barreling down on me so a few horses don't scare me. :D

Thanks

So I finally got to editing some of my barrel racing shots. A few I enjoy from my day. All taken on the same day from 2pm to 7:30 pm.

I have quite a few more but Flickr surely kills the quality of them. I need to find a better place to upload.

Have you tried linking to your flickr photos instead of hosting them here? You may discover the quality is better.
