They're not part of my workflow, because canned processes rarely suit me. But if you're just starting out or if you're experimenting with a new process, I highly recommend referring to the ones included with LR as they can be very instructive. Don't simply apply the preset, but, instead, study what qualities are being adjusted. Then you can perform the process without aid of the preset. There's plenty of free ones available online. I wouldn't waste my money on the ones available for sale.

I use presets in LR, but only ones I have created for myself. I tend just use them to set baseline settings for specific types of conversions. So when I find I am using a similar group of settings repetedly I will make them into a preset.

(Were did you get them)?

Aah...Google
They are nothing more than some other person's idea of what might look good in a particular image.
Better to envision that yourself.

You should read Big Al's post.

I use them, but like Al they are ones I created myself, based on my own vision and as a result of editing images to meet my creative vision. Like Al they I use them as a baseline - a starting point for what I want and then tweak individual images from there.

When I use them, I find myself using the free Scott Kelby LR presets from time to time, often continuing to 'tweak' the image to my personal taste from there.

It's useful to note that you can use presets for a variety of things, not just the global adjustments in the Develop module.
I've made global presets for show photos at the venue where I shoot performances at least once per month. and a handful of other presets.

But perhaps more importantly, I've made my own presets for the Adjustment Brush, for a variety of tasks that I regularly do:
- Updated the built-in Skin Soften preset from -100 to -50 clarity, because -100 is just too much.
- "Skin Brighten" and "Skin Darken" presets for dodging and burning on skin, especially faces
- "Sunburn fix" and "Sunburn Fix Heavy" preset for fixing redness and sunburns on skin
- "Tattoo enhance" preset for .. well, enhancing tattoos.

I think there may be more that I can't remember.
