Seems to be frowned on pretty much and I have only done 4 to date but I shot this yesterday with the notion of making it number 4. Be critical if you like or if you like please say so.

I think the negativity of selective color is it is a simple trick and has been overdone. I think the reality is if you adjust just a single channel of color or the saturation of a single object in a picture you are using selective color, so everyone uses it to some extent.

I like the image, I might put the color back into the spots on the leaf. Even if it is undersaturated from the original. I find the grey spots matching the deck unpleasant.

Thanks but I can't put color back into something that wasn't there.

The most selective color I've seen is in bridal work, and pretty much overdone with the colorful bouquet in the middle of b/w. This is a bit different though and I like it.

Some of the things going for it: I love the texture of the gray bark background. It's like the leaf is assembled in its own shadow box mat. The simplicity of the red leaf on that equally simple background sets it off very well. And then there's something about the red itself....a bit different than the standard reds we see a lot. That gently curve of the leaf also gives it some interesting dimensionality as it just sits there, far from perfect in its own design, but unique in its own way. Thanks for sharing.

i like it. i think it would look great printed on something metallic and reflective. the leaf would especially sparkle given its little spots.

i think this would be one of the images that would wow the negative crowd if printed well and large. i think it's harder to appreciate on the screen.

I like it. I also like "dogs playing poker" paintings. Both have been overdone. Both have a place in the art world.

Cruise, I think your "Red" has a nice metallic feel in the leaf.
Also a very nice leaf, Chris. Good depth to it.

Yeah. I was hoping selective color was all over since I'm not a big fan in general, but I still get specific requests for that same colorful bouquet in the middle of a B&W wedding shot... and I do it if they insist, gotta keep the client happy.

As far as the op's photo. I too think it would benefit from being all red, even if you have to colorize it a bit. The grey areas are a little distracting. Overall I think it's a bit too bold. Red is really easy to overdo, and I'd back it down a bit so that the rest of the image isn't overpowered by a flood of red, but that's just my taste. The texture and depth are great though. Nice work.

I'm a bigger fan of the "after the rain" image due to its more subtle color. Its the feel of the image, like a bit of warmth in the cold. Or maybe I'm just projecting bc I'm not liking the current decline in temperatures here in the south. Lol
