I am looking to purchase a 15" MacBook Pro Retina, I am trying to decide if the upgraded model with the 2gb dedicated graphics card is worth the price for what I will use it for which is mainly photo editing using Lightroom CC mainly with the occasionally going over to photoshop. I don't do video editing except for some timelapse. Should I just get the base model with 16gb of ram and the 256 ssd? My main computer is a 27" iMac, this one will be mainly for travel and on the go editing. I plan on using a 1 or 2tb external thunderbolt drive for storage

Always better to have and not need than need and not have.

For probability I would recommend the new MacBook. It weights significantly less and has a stock 256gb and 512gb option.
Do you need the extra ports versus weight on your portable computer?
Just my opinion.

While I personally wish the new MacBook offered a 16gb ram option.
That is because my Mac Air is my only computer and it does fine with 8gigs of ram for editing photos.

If you don't need it right now wait until the ones with the new processors come out in the spring.

That is what I am thinking about doing, and possibly looking at a 13" for more mobility...

My maxed out, at the time, three year old MacBook Pro Retina 15" is now base spec. Ouch. 1gb video 256ssd 16gb ram - it flies along on the most part. You'd be fine with the base spec I'd say.

Is that the one that comes in 3 colors? If it is, it's crippled by the Core M processor and is not up to doing photo editing in the Adobe products.

^ really?

I know the M processor is underpowered compared to the current offerings of Air and of course the Pro.

I use a 2012 Base 11" Air: dual core i5 with 8gig and I batch just fine.

I think the speed would be about the same as mine. And I don't feel crippled at all.
Just my opinion from my experience.

It's really up to you, but the base model with 16gb ram and 256 is really powerful and should be good enough. At least it is for me, I just got it.
