Hi,

I just bought the external Canon GP-E2 GPS tracker for my 5D Mark III and am unable to install Canon's MapUtility to download the log files. According to Canon support I should install ImageBrowserEX, select a tagged image and I should be seeing a map/globe symbol to access MapUtility. However, in my case no map symbol shows up and I am unable to find MapUtility using spotlight.

Any idea where MapUtility should be? How can I force MapUtility to be installed alongside ImageBrowserEX. I would also be happy to use an alternative software to download track logs from the GP-E2 but couldn't find any.

And help is greatly appreciated.

There should have been a DVD containing software that came with the GP-E2. You'd install Map Utility from there. Unfortunately (and this is probably the second biggest issue I have with the GP-E2), there doesn't appear to be any other way to get the GPS tracking data from the GP-E2 if you didn't let it tag the pictures when they were taken. The biggest is that it won't work with files stored on a network or removable drive.

Let's start at the beginning, though.

  1. Is your 5D3 seeing the GP-E2 (are you able to access the GPS command interface from the 5D3's menu)?
  2. Can you get latitude and longitude from the GPS Settings display on the 5D3 menu?
  3. Is the top LCD display showing a steady "GPS" icon?
  4. Are pictures taken with the GP-E2 in place and with a good fix (GPS LED blinking steadily once, not 3x, at a time; GPS icon on the top LCD steady) showing GPS data? It'll be an additional "INFO" display sequence after the image, image with basic info, image with histogram and image with shooting data.
  5. Those pictures should show a satellite icon in ImageBrowser or "GPS" in Digital Photo Pro, and include a link for a map, or Map Utility, in the frame area.

How far along that list can you get?

I have exact same issue except now I cannot even install ImageBrowserEX as it does not appear to work with OS X 10.11.1+

Does Apple offer a compatibility mode, or don't they care about breaking other companies' software?
